| Thanks Leyla they are great. Although I keep thinking I cannot really remember much about Cyprus of those days, when I see old pictures like that I somehow feel at home. The one that interested me most is the open asbestos mines.......the cause of my Sarcoidosis that I am suffering from today. :cry: |

Indeed.
The best thing about those photographs, apart from their superb preservation (by no means a given - my father left photographs from the 1960s onwards and most of the early ones were in such appalling condition, with the colours faded or even changed, they had to be thrown out) is the visual purity.
No T-shirts reading "adidas" or "fcuk" - in fact, no logos at all, and nothing glaring or out of place. Huzza! |

| The pictures of Girne really stood out for me, few boats in the harbour, no tourists, and the aerial view makes it look so small compared to today. |

Look at the images of the Turkish parades, i bet these were like a dagger through the heart for Makarios, Grivas and Sampson!

| I really don't wish to offend anyone but I was hoping to keep this thread neutral so we could simply enjoy the photos for what they are :? Wasn't it refreshing to see these images without the usual symbols of nationalism or commercialism stamped on them? :? |

Sorry, but I found the photo truly striking, a great insight into the political situation of Cyprus in the 1960's. I've rarely seen any photos from that era, this particular one gives me some feeling of the ethnic nationalism which existed at the time.
Does it make proud? Not particularly, nor does it make me sad, I just accept these things were inevitable given the circumstances of that era. |
