its not about sympathy. its history.
the highest part of troodos mountain had a completely different development from other fertile regions (like morphou for example) of cyprus. the asbestos mine did save the region from mass immigration.
i know that we are preoccupied with the cyppro, and forget some of the socio-economic structures that have developed in different parts of cyprus. too often the structures that developed were closely related to the source of income.
regions who had no access to a stable income became pretty fast deserted.
in troodos people stayed so long the mine was open.
when it was closed down people left for the cities... or at the end of the 70s to saudi arabia.

as for cancer it came later... my great-grandfather died from it, my grandfather had cancer , and his brother also died from it. if you search the region you will hardly find any worker who didnot later on developed some kind of disease bc of that mine.

Did you notice something else in the pictures?
With the exception of the covered woman on the donkey and the Greek Cypriot monk,you couldn't tell if the people were Greek Cypriot or Turkish Cypriot...

There were no religious signs or relics on the people.
Who can tell if the Cypriot girl was a Turkish Cypriot or Greek Cypriot???

I meant sympathy for me Cyp. Apparently my Sarcoidosis comes from those open mines. Asbestos breathed in when I was young and I was not a worker. I am alright though...........don't worry about me.............. :x

It certainly is! Truth be told I was searching for a particular image of an old street in Nicosia and I was amazed at what I found and that it was part of gallery. I'll check out the movie clips as well and see if I can access them.

There is one photo on the Old Photos of Cyprus website that I particularly like (from the Then and Now section) and its of the two women baking bread.

One clip is of UN soldiers around Ledra and another is of a group of boys enjoying the sea (pretty wavy!) in Kyrenia.

As for the asbestos...that is what I was told when I was diagnosed twenty years ago ..............but I don't like to talk about it :sadd:

Yay!! I don't know why I just couldn't find the page anywhere... :?

I'm definitely saving it now though!

Believe it or not, I was going through my pictures (Of which there are quite a few) and came across a picture that I think is a lot older than the 1920 ones on that album, probably late 1800's, I'll put in on the 'historic images of Cyprus' Album. I do remember that it came from an Album, so I'll try and find it (Although, as we know, finding web pages is not one of my strong points, you may be waiting a while... :lol: ).

(Oh and I also love the picture of those three girls, they look so Sweet and cheeky... :D )
