hi there
During our holiday to come we want to cross the border (and back!). There is a travel agency here in Holland that says that the checkpoints may be open at some days and closed at other days.
Can you Cypriots tell me if this is true? Could it happen that we are going to be stuck at a closed checkpoint?
best regards
Nieske

The check-point are open every day.

There is no risk getting stuck.

Nieske, the crossings are open every day. They have been so since 2003 and you run no risk of being stuck. Probably best not to call it a 'border' though ;)

OK, thanks for your answers, Moose and PG. If you don't call it a 'border', which word then do you think is right / do you prefer?

Borders divide countries, and we Cypriots want to believe that our country is not divided even so the unfortunate reality is that the island is ethnically separated.

Green line is propably a word that I will rather use.

Have fun in Cyprus and few tips from me
1. drink zivania,
2. try Cyprus sandwiches from the side of the road,
3. Ask some locals to make you souvla (if you get the chance to meet any)
4. try ayrani (a yogurt drink)
5. stay away from politics or look at the different points of view.
6. Cypriots are crazy, friendly and hospitable
7. if you go in summer stay away from Lefkosia and also take condoms!
8. if you go in winter spend more time in Lefkosia

cheers

What about the bloody museum, the theatre etc. Are we that backward? Is this the impression we give to the visitors? Mindless, hedonistic bananiots ...?

Young people my friend, they are foremost interested in drinking, eating and having fun and will probably enjoy those (theater, museums, etc.) sort of things in later life.

thanks for judging us being 'young people' :D . I'm 43, my wife is 46; we're going together so I don't think I should use condoms.....
However, we like drinking, eating and having fun, so your advises about drinking and eating we may follow up!

In Lefkosia, near the old stadium (which has been demolished, but I'm sure if you ask someone will point you in the direction), there is a small sandwich place which looks incredibly unhygienic, but does the best meat sandwiches you will ever taste. If your cholesterol is high don't risk it, if not, enjoy... the old boy who runs it has been there for as long as anyone can remember.

Eat gleftiko, lamb roasted in a mud oven, with pastichio, a pasta dish which makes lasagna look limp. If you like fish, eat frangi, cooked on a searing hot plate of steel, an ugly fish with large teeth, a skin you can make boots with, but a meat which is tender, tasting like the sea, but gamey.

Cheers!
