G'day all,
Just to let people know, ones especially living in North Cyprus, that the ADSL infrastructure is being installed since last week when the equipment arrived to Cyprus, and it is expected to be functional in a month or two.
The company which is responsible for the installation has set up a website about it too. Go to http://www.adslcyprus.com to check it out.
They update the news section once every two or three days. In this way you can follow the progress.
You can also check the availability of ADSL in your region by entering the first 3 digits of your phone number from the main page.
The website is supposedly bilingual in English and Turkish. But I guess they are not updating the English version as frequently as the Turkish version.
Anyway, I was extremely happy when I found out all this and even more happy that they are actually installing ADSL2+, which is pretty much the latest point ADSL technology has evolved, allowing bandwidths as large as 24Mbits in theory. I believe the highest offered bandwidth will be 2Mbits in the beginning (downstream), which is already very very good for ordinary home users.
PS: There is also the possibility to pre-apply for ADSL service from this site. They will apparently give the priority to the people who have already applied via the website first, once they actually start the service. |

This takes me back ... reminds me of the anticipation in the UK six years ago! (Six years? Pass the pipe and slippers ;) )
It is good that they've gone straight to ADSL2+, and I hope the bandwidth is cranked up to the maximum quickly and not artificially restricted. I have a (theoretically) 24Mb/sec service which, in practice, is about 17-19Mb/sec. However, this is ahead of the game and the rest of the Internet is catching up; although I have noticed some improvement in the 18 months I have had the connection, a lot of sites and services are still well behind, giving speeds which "feel" about 1-2Mb/sec.
(Interestingly, Linux sites appear to be most advanced; I am frequently getting downloads of distributions/patches at 16Mb/sec ... !) |

Thanks for that info moonskin
Have signed up :)
Hopefully I'll hear from them soon.
Top service level seems to be 2Mbit down 512Kbit up and there are no prices I can see atm. |

Erol,
So, having used the new ADSL service for a while now, will you be able to give us your opinions on the quality of the service? You know, speed, stability, problem solving ability of the telco/isp people etc.
I heard recently that there was a big problem with the system. What is the story with that? |
