Interesting article in Cyprus Mail about foreigners not having the right to vote in a local bi-election because the House failed to amend the electoral law in time. Pretty scandalous really, it would be interesting to see how this would have affected election campaigns in these areas, given that Cypriot politicians would be forced to take account of the views of non-Cypriots... interesting question for sure. Can you imagine if Cypriot politicians suddenly had to take account of the views of 20,000 foreigners...

Yet again the Republic of Cyprus tramples its citizens rights, how long ago were they meant to be amending so their second class citizens the Turkish Cypriot can vote after an absense of their rights for over 30 years now.

A really good letter in Cyprus Mail today from one of the Peyia residents affected. Sums up the situation very well, if rather provocatively  .
Quote: Please, Mr President please show that the Republic of Cyprus stands not only by its treaties, but also Hellenistic principles!
If not, the record will be that Democracy, the crowning glory of ancient Greece is discarded in the smoke filled rooms of Nicosia’s squalid political elite.
Bravo!

For now... yes. Strictly speaking I believe there's a CYP£500 for not voting, but I don't know of anyone who's actually been fined for abstention. I think compulsory voting is something that will be phased out soon, it's not common practice across the EU, as the rest of our voting turnout figures demonstrate.

Just a quick question, need a pretty swift answer to this one if possible folks... is compulsory voting in Cyprus strictly enforced? i.e. is fining common practice for not voting or is it a simple slap on the wrists and don't do it again?
