Here's my first stab at it. Based upon the old Republic of Cyprus flag, but with elements designed to incorporate the 'nations' of the island. The blue of the Greek Cypriots, sits side by side with the red of Turkish Cypriots, with the white band in the middle denoting peace between them. The inclusion of the map and olive branch reinforce this.

Surely we can do better than the flag proposed by the Annan Plan competition...

| The annan plan flag was hideous and should be burnt and buried so no poor soul has the misfortune of ever seeing it again. |

It does indeed, albeit with the colours representing different meanings. In the French flag, the blue is the colour of Saint Martin - a symbol of care and of the duty of the rich to help the poor; the white is the colour of the Virgin Mary or alternatively of Joan of Arc, who helped expel the hated English  ; the red is the colour of Saint Denis, the patron saint of Paris.
The difference between the proposed one for Cyprus and that of France is that the French flag has a deeper shade of blue. |

| It will be interesting to see what others come up with, but the current Republic of Cyprus flag was designed by a Turkish Cypriot who just created it on a scrap of paper. |

I think you need a flag that not only represents the people of the country, but is also interesting to look at and interesting for little kids to draw. The old Cyprus flag was good in that it was simple, but it said little about the people of the country or its history. My proposal attempts to show that Cyprus does have two historical communities who owe their allegiance to different cultural traditions, but can exist within one space in peace. At least thats the hope.
Of course... we could always return to the colonial flag...

| It'd certainly keep the kids busier for a longer time than drawing the AP flag :D |

Your idea is excellent moose, I like it very much. I think keeping the map with the two olive tree branches is a good idea.
P.S. How do you import photos? |

Thanks for the feedback Bananiot, I did actually submit it for the AP competition, but it seemed they didn't like it
As for importing photos, I uploaded it to www.xs.to and then linked to it. |

| personally, i dont like the blue and red in the flag at all. however, i am not sure if Turkish Cypriots will be able to live w/out a carbon copy of the Turkish flag in general so I guess red will be inevitable and hence so will blue in order to balance things out. |
