Quote:
CIRCUMCISION reduces the risk of HIV infection by half, according to a study conducted among nearly 8000 adult males in Kenya and Uganda.
It proved so effective that the study was halted a year early and the procedure offered to all the study's participants.
Previous research has suggested circumcision is beneficial, but the new trial is "definitive", said Dr Anthony Fauci, director of the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases, which co-sponsored the study with the Canadian Institutes of Health Research.
"It's not a magic bullet," said Dr Kevin de Cock, the director of the World Health Organisation's department of HIV/AIDS. But he said it had the potential to save "many hundreds of thousands and perhaps millions of infections over coming years".
The findings, which apply only to heterosexual transmission of HIV from women to men, will have less impact in the US, where nearly 80 per cent are circumcised and gay sex plays a large role in transmitting the virus.
But they could have a significant effect in countries where heterosexual contact is the main form of transmission.
Nonetheless, experts cautioned against the possible misperception that circumcision eliminated risk. The procedure "has to be integrated with all the other things that we do to prevent new HIV infections," said Robert Bailey, an epidemiologist at the University of Illinois

The WHO (world health organisation) approved these findings on the news last night. |

This is something most muslims have known for centuries that circumcision is to keep it healthy etc. hence can you get back in the line, your pee-pee is going for the CHOP.
Ohhhhh...it won't hurt but just sting a little and then its all over and you get lots of pressies and a party and if you are really lucky we might even let you ride a horse around the streets with lots of cars driving behind you tooting their horns and a davul and zurna playing music while the convoy travels around letting all know you have become a big man.   |

what I am missing in the article is WHY does it cut the risk?
Just because the 'area' is cleaner?
Quote: in the US, where nearly 80 per cent are circumcised
Interesting fact btw. How comes? I don't think 80% of the male population are muslims :-)
I'm not very sure about other countries in Europe, but here in Germany this is a rare case. |

From the article:
Quote: Early small trials of circumcision had shown a beneficial effect, but experts feared the benefits might be related to cultural bias rather than the procedure itself.
I assume the question is: does those who are circumcised come from parts of society that has different social/sexual habits than those who are not circumcised?
Anyway, it can't hurt to try, or? |
