| I was talking to my mum about Cyprus the other day and I am sure I have heard her story before but I had forgotten. She was telling me about the troubles in 1963 to 65 before we left Cyprus for the UK. She said that they used to sit outside our house in Lefcosa and listen to the gun fire near by. If they heard a single shot rifle they would shout "Turkish" and laugh. If they heard machine gun fire they would shout "Greek" and laugh again. This piece of film shows the surrealness of a situation when you know you are in danger but do not really know how to change your life to get away from it. These shots were only a couple of hundred yards from where we used to live and I can even remember tracer bullets flying over our house. This film hit home more than I would have liked. |

My heart bleeds when I look at the movie.
My parents were caught in a curfew in 1985 when I was still a baby. My mother says my father was almost shot by a soldier, while she tried to run away with me in her hand.
I am so glad this war never reached Bulgaria though. When I think about it, it could easily have. They cleansed 350,000 of us, changed our names, but we had no weapons to fight back. We put up, and the war was averted. |
