I think Simerini should be punished somehow.
Infact I think a lot of newspapers are given too much freedom with the lies they print. |

interesting is to take a tour around the newspapers today :
phileleftheros :
Tpap "those who did that are brainless"
A long article staying mainly on the facts , and stressing the support of the Greek Cypriot students , and ofcource the great comments from the president
politis :
besides a long article, the editorial , and a couple of more columnists are dealing with the topic. their critiism is directed against the goverment, the church and education who they consider implicitly responsible for what happenned
alitheia : "rasism - panic"
mahi : "....." .....(first topic «Κατεψυγμένο αρνάκι» which would translate into "small frozen lamp" , reffering to some corruption problem)
simerini "brainless" - stressing the statement made by tpap. (second topic : the state is defensless , people can enter illegally from the dead zone" )
haravgi (akels newspaper) "nationalism is wearing masks"
from translations we get
kibris : around 20 Greek Cypriot students wearing masks attacked and injured two Turkish Cypriot students. soyer demands the giulty to be brought to justice
yeni douzen : "we are thirsty for piece, not for clashes"
africa " Greek Cypriot and Turkish Cypriot students stood up together against the attack"
volkan : 50 (!) Greek Cypriot with masks attacked Turkish Cypriot students shouting "stingy turks we dont want you in our school, get the hell out of here, we will kill you all" |

according to politis today :
simerini on 20th november wrote that a Turkish Cypriot " during the lesson of psysical education, got furious when he saw the cross on the neck of his Greek Cypriot fellow student and he spat at him"
Acoording to he principal of the english school St. Haggett : the incident happened between two kids only 11 years old. the kids had a fight and the Turkish Cypriot student spat on the ground. neither on the chest nor on the cross of his fellow student
simerini didnot stop there it also gave a wrong interpratation of the policy of the school concerning religious symbols, which ofcource is not banning them, but simply what is not allowed is to provoke using them.
now tell me, when i say burn them , if i am wrong

.............
any statement from the "enosi syntakton" (union of editors /journalists) up to now ? |

While I can understand your sentiment, I cannot condone it. The burning of books, newspapers or people is simply wrong. There MUST be another way.
I am surprised to discover that Turkish Cypriot students are totally subsidised by Republic of Cyprus, I think this should be means tested. ( Wealthy parents pay and poor parents do not) but for ALL.
I would also like to spend a short while with the 11/12 year old Turkish Cypriot boy and discuss the merits of spitting in the first place. I would hope to convince him of the error of his ways.
I also remember the "fights" that took place between state schools and private schools in London. The sentiments expressed by the youth at that time , if reported in the papers , would have shocked most if not all of the parents of those youngsters.
A storm in a tea cup , but as Brother points out, it may expand into something more |

Well this subject seems like a grey area because restricting what newspapers say is technically restricting freedom of speech.
But many newspapers like to go to far and have detrimental consequences with their headlines.
For things like this, there should be some kind of body to judge whether the newspaper was being provocotive or not or examine how much they knew what they were printing was false.
Well, whether the Turkish Cypriot kid spat on the floor or at the pupil (if that IS true), it was still wrong but at 11 years old you cant take the kid seriously - thats ridiculous. I wonder what the kid is taught at home about Christianity for him to get angry - 11 years old is an impressionable age.
These kids who set out and attacked the Turkish Cypriot students need to be made an example of. |

how about stripping them, hanging them upside down and giving them a real spank on the ass (in a public square preferably) ?
thats for sure another way

.....
seriously now, ofcource one shouldnot burn them.
but the Union who is responsible for the ethical code of newspapers and journalists should take action. promoting, hate is completely unaaceptable. |

the boy apologised, and his parents sent an apology letter to the school administration and to the parents of the Greek Cypriot. the parents met and they together agreed that the topic has ended.
all this happened before simerini, decided to publish the above incident.
...........
radio proto (belonging to the same group as simerini) is among other things re-defining the greek language.
"o tk eftise pano tou sto edafos" :bash:
the Turkish Cypriot spat at him (the other student) on the ground.
according to this radio an 18 year old has been arrested and he apparently admitted participating in the event ( they say that he is from bulgaria !!!! ...i wouldnt take that too seriously) |

For partition I would even pose as a Greek and beat Turkish Cypriots up.
But kidding aside, a few months ago I did prophesize and asked Kifeas of what would happen in case of unification if a Turkish kid beat a Greek cypriot kid, and his answered never involved black hooded men beating and physically assaulting students, it was something about living together for hundreds of years and being able to deal with such incidents maturely. |
