ISTANBUL, Turkey : The gunman who shot Pope John Paul II has petitioned a court to be released from prison immediately, saying calculations of his time already served were incorrect and that he wanted to meet the new pope when he visits Istanbul , his lawyer said Friday.
"We hope he will be released immediately," lawyer Mustafa Demirbag said. "He served an extra two and 1/2 years that are not being counted."
Mehmet Ali Agca, who shot Pope John Paul II in 1981, has served prison time in both Italy and Turkey . He was released from prison earlier this year because of an incorrect calculation by a lower court on his time already served.
Demirbag said Agca hoped to meet the new pope, Benedict XVI, when the pontiff travels to Turkey later this month.
"I want to meet the pope with millions of others at the Haghia Sophia," Demirbag quoted Agca as saying. The Haghia Sophia is a sixth century church in Istanbul .
Agca had previously warned Benedict against coming to Turkey , saying his life would be in danger. He also apologized that he couldn't meet Benedict because he was in prison.
Earlier this year, Agca was released from prison by mistake but was sent back on Jan. 20, eight days after being freed. An appeals court ruled he had to serve more time for killing a prominent Turkish journalist, Abdi Ipekci, in 1979, and reversed the lower court ruling that had allowed him to be freed.
He is currently scheduled to be released in 2010. |
