Thank you all for the kind remarks about my contributions about Cyprus, its people and its problems.

As a person who has been interested in the Island since I was a 16 year-old at high school in the United States and has spent long periods of my life in Cyprus (both sides) for the past 30 or so years, I've had the opportunity to meet ordinary people, the decision-takers and the military and see places denied to many.

While I have my own opinions about the 'problem', I have tried to avoid the trap of getting involved in 'local' politics and expressing views on these matters, as I am a foreigner and fervently believe Cypriots must look to themselves for solutions. To retain some objectivity also, I have never accepted payment for my from any individual or organization. I have, of course, been tempted by the inducements offered by those who wish to project a particular line and I know many writers - and UK politicians - who have taken the 'free' house, bag of gold or business partnership in return for promoting a particular line of thought.

Although by covering Cyprus for the media, I have tried to report truthfully, I'm sorry to say, like others before me and those to follow, I have been accused of bias towards one side or the other. I have offended in equal proportion not only Cypriots, but foreign residents, especially the Brits. Greek-speaking Cypriots have said I was in the pay of those in the North and Cypriot Turk officials have arrested me on several occasions, accusing me of being a Greek 'spy'. I regard these as my badges of honor!

As a consequence I have soimetimes wondered why I bother at all. Only when readers, like yourselves, read, comment and react, whether positively or negatively (but politely) do I feel my efforts are worth continuing. I thank you all again and I hope you will continue to study the sites Erol has suggested. I wish you and this site every success in creating more understanding.

thanks for paying a visit. i must say your work seems to be one of a kind out there taking a different approach to modern cyprus history. i love the pictures.

however (of course :) ) i will honestly say that i did not like a specific comment ( i have yet to see all the images and read the captions) regarding to Makarios "Who would have thought in those days he would use his church to destroy the unity of his native island in an orgy of pain and hate?"

I was wondering if you were the one who wrote these captions or got them ready. Although I must say I somewhat agree with this comment I don't think it is the right place to be put in a pictorial when the audience should be conjuring images of their own. At least that is my opinion. your work though is definitely wonderful nonetheless.

David, forgive me for a request... do you know of anywhere where I can obtain a photograph of Makarios, Kyprianou, Clerides and Papadopoulos together?

I know that I can easily get these separately, but I've read references to a picture from the early 1960s where Makarios and his respective 'lieutenants' are collected in one. It would be extremely useful to me if you know of anywhere I can find one (electronically if possible)

I'll look thru my files - all on disk - and see if I can find any? Weren't all of them in London in February 1959 when the basics of the 1960 Republic were hammered out?

Just a few lines to 'magikthrill' - I may be an old codger, with one foot in the grave, but calling me 'Mr Carter' is unnecessary. I prefer to be addressed by my first name - David.

You asked if the captions attached to the pictures in my Cyprus pictorial history files were my own. Yes, they are, but are based on information from various sources. Where I quote something exactly, I try to give the source. The captions try to put the pictures into a context. Without them, the viewer's imagination can't fill the gaps in the story behind them.

Off hand I can't recall the line about Archbishop Makarios - nor whether it was mine or said by someone else. However, within the context of the period and the understanding of Cypriot affairs by the British, I think the remark is fair. His involvement in the Eoka movement came as a surprise. Contemporary church leaders elsewhere were keen to promote non-violent solutions and the founder of the Christian religion preached that His followers should never take up the sword, ever.
