Saddam probably, just...
Let's not forget Saddam was a nasty bugger, who launched his poor people into aggressive wars against Iran (in which Iraq lost hundreds of thousands) and Kuwait (another 100,000 dead at least); gassed and bombed his own people (remember Halabjah); and ran a terror state in which you could be plucked off the street and never seen again.
Then again, if you look at it on a simple geo-strategic level, he was no longer a threat to his neighbours, nor to the west. His state did not harbour terrorists; women were free to conduct daily life outside the veil; and the Kurds were allowed to keep the autonomy they'd won after 1991 without threatening the viability of the state.
He was no angel, but his power kept the state of Iraq stable. What we have now is a dangerous breeding ground for fundamentalism, sucking in guerilla fighters from all over the world to fight the infidels on Arab soil. We have a state in the process of breakdown, with sunni, shia and kurd unable to agree on a common constitution. The Kurds look likely to have de facto independence, which will scare authorities in Iran, Syria and Turkey, the Shia look likely to institute sharia law in the south and possibly follow Iran's lead in theocratic government.
In other words, it's a mess... and a mess that George W. Bush and Tony Blair should be blamed for. They went in to take out a dictator, with no plan for what should come after. I'm certain they thought that they would be welcomed with open arms and Iraq would hop nicely into democracy, despite never having experienced it. How misguided they were... may the deaths of all the Iraqis haunt them until they head off to the inferno themselves. |

Turkish just does not translate literally into English.
In turkish there is no word for “the” or “a” for starters – usually most sentences start with a noun and end with a verb which makes for a multitude of verb/tense endings, which is where I always screw up.
Anyway literal translation imo is
cocuklar - (the) children
oldurulmesin -should not be killed
seker -sweet (ies)
de yiyebilsinler - also may they eat.
nearest i can get is:
rather than death, let the children taste sweetness. |
