Turkish writer Orhan Pamuk has won the 2006 Nobel Prize in Literature.
Pamuk, 54, has gained a reputation for tackling controversial issues through his novels and has faced legal action in his homeland.
Awarded by the Swedish Academy, the Literature Prize comes with a cheque for 10m kronor (£740,000).
The Academy said: "In the quest for the melancholic soul of his native city, (Pamuk) has discovered new symbols for the clash and interlacing of cultures."

Well done Orhan Pamuk. My favourite ofcourse is another Orhan (Veli) but Pamuk is one of those courageous writers who throughout history have done wonders in enhancing democracy in their own country by doing exactly what the official state usually accuses them for.
I guess the Generals and the Grey Wolves will not sleep well tonight... |

| The Turkish media covered the story last night and they quite rightly stated they don't know whether they should celebrate or commiserate and did Mr Pamuk receive this prize on the basis of his exceptional literary ability or was it just another slap in the face of Turkey? |

I just did not want to seem as if I was gloating
He deserves the honour and is a fantastic writer. I very much enjoyed "The White Castle". I have had a few more of his books given to me last Christmas but have still to find the time to do them justice. |

Give us time, it only happened yesterday! Yes i am proud that a Turk can be counted among those to have won a Nobel prize. I dont believe the accusations that it was political. If they really wanted to make a statement they would have done it last year when he was on trial. He was favourite to win it last year anyway, so it is overdue. Well done Orhan. |

Orhan Pamuk is a brilliant writer but there were at least 3 other writers writing in Turkish who deserved the Nobel more in my opinion: Nazim Hikmet,Aziz Nesin, and the very much alive Yashar Kemal...
A pity Pamuk will never live down the suspicion that his award was politically tainted.Nonetheless,a considerable achievement for one so young (relatively speaking).Well done... |
