BEIJING, Sept. 17 (UPI) -- Marcos Baghdatis defeated Mario Ancic Sunday in straight sets at the China Open to win his first Association of Tennis Professionals single's title.

Competing in only the third ATP final of his career, Baghdatis beat Ancic 6-4, 6-0 to take home the Beijing crown, its $69,200 top prize, and the 21-year-old's first ever ATP single's championship.

"It's my first title, it's a great moment and I'm really happy about that, especially playing a great match today," said the event's third-seeded player.

Cheers
I will try to go fro the World Jelly Wrestling Titles at the Palais in Melbourne this summer as a Cypriot:
Crikey Marcos you did IT!

Congratualtions to this talent.

But is he really a "Cypriot", of Lebanese and Greek Cypriot origin, he only part Greek Cypriot, what does that really make him? You guys are so quick to make him a Cypriot because hes winning, Im sure you would disown him if he was rubbish. Did he train in the south? did your administration support him financially? or do you just like the glory?

He was born and bred in Cyprus. Above all he thinks of himself as a Cypriot. All credit for his success goes to his family who believed in him and his talent and bore the expenses of his training in France (making loans) ever since he was 13 years old. The state did little to help him in this respect. Also, his success is just a sporting success and nothing else. People that try to read different things into his success are normally rather stupid.

Viewpoint,
He feels Cypriot therefore he is. I dont know if you are married or not, but lets say you are married, to a turkish lady and you have a son, born and bred in Cyprus. I would condider your son a Cypriot full stop. What yould you consider him though?? I know his Lebanese father considers himself Cypriot and does so his children...

So according to your logic an inidian who thinks hes "Cypriot" is Cypriot or is it that a marriage between a Greek Cypriot and and English person when the child is born and raised in the UK in English? Or should the child born to a Greek Cypriot Turkish Cypriot marriage in the UK raised in the UK be Cypriot?

He was born here to mixed parents and raised in and trained in France since the age of 13, does that make him French? Lebanese or Cypriot?

Viewpoint, Bagdatis says he is a Cypriot. At least, let us respect the wish of the man. Later, if he gets fed up with the mentality of this banana republic and decides that he is French, then, again, its his right.

He is a Cypriot national. He feels Cypriot and behaves like one. He is not Greek Cypriot or Lebanese Cypriot. In a way this makes him more CYPRIOT than any of us.According to your logic, American blacks are West Indian, Nigerian, Sudanese, etc etc....Contoliza Rice is Bangu Bangu....
