These are pictures of the monastery known as Mar or Mor Gabriel located between Batman and Midyat. It's been under restoration for 32 years. Many Assyrians are returning back to southeastern Turkey from Europe and are investing heavily into these monasteries to recapture their former glory. They are doing a good job.
Check out this bathroom in the compound. It was no nice and clean I didn't want stink it up. I waited until I got back to the hotel.
The Grand Court Yard at Mar Gabriel.
They made me wear a sheet before they let me go in because I was wearing shorts. But I did get to meet the Metropolitan of the compound. He acted like royalty. I guess to some extent he is.
The main sanctuary.
This golden Mosaic was dobated to the monastery by the Emperor Thodoseus around 408 or 409. Sadly it's beginning to fall apart. Anyone know somebody that can help retsore it?
This bible is about 200 years old. Pretty cool.
Jesus and the 40 Martyrs.
This is a miniature of the Monastery made of matchsticks. I visited three monasteries and all three had them. I guess the monks get
pretty bored.
Main dining chamber used my members of the monastery in the past.
These are the catacombs. It is said that 12 thousand people are burried in here. The priests are usually burried in a sitting position facing east. |

| Very nice photos Tufan .... we didnt get a close look at the knee caps btw, so if you wish to send in photos I will be able to give you a score from 1-10, in fact all men on the forum can send in pics of their knee caps if they wish, we can have sexy knee cap comp :) |
