Silk Road To Sanliurfa. The six lane highway ended in Gaziantep and we were diverted to this small highway that changed size from 2 to 4 lanes. The major highway is still under construction and is being added on to.

Urfa in the distance. Notice the horse and wagon on the right. EU here we come.

More Silk Road. Notice pistacheo trees on either side.

The entrance to Balikli Gol in Sanliurfa. Supposedly Ibrahim (Abraham) was dispatched into a lake of fire. When he hit the the fire the burning logs turned into fish and the fire turned into a sweet water lake.

The twin columns where Ibrahim was dispatched from.

Mrs. Kayakiran and a family friend.

One of the many Monasteries in Midyat, Turkey. This is an Orthodox faith. They speak and write in Suriyani. A language based on the ancient Aramaic.

The Priest that is in charge of the place. He seemed a bit uptight.

Now we are off to an old house that belonged to a wealthy family. It has been turned over to the city so that everyone can come in and enjoy it. Mrs. Kayakiran leads the way.

I always wanted to this since I was a kid. Sadly, the next day, 2 Turkish soldieres were ambushed and killed in a village close to Batman.

Great pictures, and astounding architecture ... I am particularly pleased that it is being actively used and maintained (there must be a few cubic kilometres of new mortar visible), rather than being turned into "monuments" which are left to crumble.

And lack of rain helps ... I noted some buildings near me which were finished in stucco (a completely inappropriate material for a variable climate) which is already stained and peeling after a couple of years!

Tufan, very nice. What made you to decide to go to Eastern Turkey? It's something on my list as well but who knows when it will happen.

Curiosity and a strong sense of wanting to know whats happening beyond our usual tourist traps in western Turkey. I was fortunate enough to meet some very wonderful people of Turkish, kurdish and arabic descent there.Mete, the country is so beautiful it is difficult to understand why we as Turkish citizens can't get along. I must admit that it has been a life altering situation but I still have my worries about Kurds. I hope that we can work this thing out.

Our excellent brother was also an inspiring factor for my trip to the SE. If we had more brothers in the world we would be much better off.

I am preparing more photos of historical sites. Kafayi yersin.

Great photos Tufan :) Loved the Batman one, reminded me of a trip to Turkey where our guide demanded we sung the Batman theme tune each time he pointed to its location on a map on the coach :D
