A very interesting and unbiased article on the Cyprus problem. Its a long reading but it definitely worths it.

interesting article , with quite balanced historic presentation.

more interesting is ofcource the topic at hand i.e. the cyprus identity , and the different methods he proposes as possible ways out. it is always nice to read some proposals - even if i dont see neither of the two leaderships to be willing to follow any of the proposed steps.

I think in many respects, this author hits the nail right on the head. And the 'solutions' he come up with, i fully agree with! Many of his ideas have been written/expressed here, so its nice to see others who think the same!

We all have our proposals, mine is based on a map, I saw in a newspaper once, as a proposal discussed between Denktash and Makarios, which I thought, and still believe is the solution which represents stability and unification.

Imagine the map of the island, divided as it is, scatter over the map, a bag of jewels, and call them Cantons: you have a solution which uses "enclaves" in a manner which will allow for the resettlement of tens of thousands, and the Right of Return, for whole communities, both "Turkish" and "Greek".

For a comprehensive solution: add a bicameral legislature, to the Republic of Cyprus, where each citizen has three votes, add a Greek Cypriot form of self determination to compliment the community as a majority, and to reciprocate with its Turkish Cypriot counterpart sensitivity to the demands of minorities within their sovereign domain add a Treaty with Turkey which recognises the Republic of Cyprus and their mutual need militarily toward regional defence, add a change to the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus Constitution, ending their fielty to another motherland (Turkey).

And Cyprus is an island having citizens who externally have an identity, because internally their communal identity can prosper because they are self-sustaining.

it is very informative i beleive, and infact answers many peoples questions (espcially some of mine) about what the younger generation thinks of each other etc.

interesting indeed. a number of things i have also noticed without being able to put them in a social science context.

i guess only alexandros can really tell us, by how far this thesis meets the criteria for a proper scientific research.
