Ataka, a notoriously anti-semite and anti-turkish party in Bulgaria, is planning to block the Turkish border in October in order to prevent Bulgarian citizens of Turkish origin residing in Turkey from crossing into Bulgaria and excercising their legitimate right to vote during the presidential elections.
The Ataka leader, Volen Sideroff, has declared that their purpose is to prevent Turks from voting for Georgi Parvanov, whom Sideroff has, on several occasions, declared a "Turkish marionette" and accused him of selling Bulgaria to the Turks. A fervent anti-Semite, a skilled populist and nationalist, Sideroff has proclaimed that Bulgaria is for the Bulgarians only, and should not be ruled by Jews and Turks. His supporters often boast about "cutting the throats of Turks" and "turning gypsies into soap".
Sideroff is currently the second-most popular member of parliament in Bulgaria and may run for President. Among other things his political program includes the nationalsation of the Bulgarian economy, pulling out of NATO, closer ties with Russia and the Arab world, introducing compulsory religious classes in Orthodoxy, and promoting the influence of the church on state affairs.
God help us!

God help him and his followers.. apparently they could use some 'help' in a sanatorium, if not a prison.
I am confident that ATAK would find 'heads' with the BNP. |

And why would a Bulgarian citizen of Turkish origin who LIVES in Turkey anymore want to vote in Bulgaria?!?! It sounds as stupid as asking German citizens of Greek origin to vote for the Greek Parliamentary elections... |

the German citizen of Greek origin does not vote for the Greek Parliamentary elections ( as far as I know ). Instead he votes for the Germany Parliamentary elections since he is a citizen of the German Federation.
what bg_turk is saying is significantly different. It is about citizens of Bulgaria, being of Turkish ethnicity but also living in Turkey. Even though one would be excused to think why they bother making the difficult trip ( albeit from the fact that Istanbul-Sofia isnt really that far ), especially since they are not ethnic Bulgarians, nor do they live there, however it is their right as citizens of Bulgaria and denying that right is criminal. |

Yes, you are absolutely right. Most of them have been expelled forcefully in the 80s and it was not really their choice to be in Turkey. In the 80s around 350,000 were forced to flee their homes under Zhivkov. The communists took away their Bulgarian citizenship, but after the democratic reforms they got them back and are now legally elligible to vote.
Many of them visit and spend their holidays in Bulgaria in their former homes.
Some families have been split because of the exodus. I have two aunts from mother's side and two cousins from father's side that live in Turkey. |
