So what was the 'president' of another country, as far as Turkey is concerned, doing at the awards ceremony of the Formula 1 event in Turkey?

Obviously it was a good opportunity to advertise the TRNCy. Provocation has no boundaries.

Are you talking about Talat? Turkey cannot do worst than the some European Union countries did when they officially invited Talat for a visit. What about the European Union and its invitation to pseudo MP's to the Europarliament? These are more serious incidents than the invitation by Turkey to watch a football match or indeed a car race

I was wondering a bit when they announced that the person presenting the trophy was Mehmet Ali Talat, the 'representative of the area'.....

However, I believe if he was invited to watch the race then I would just consider this to be a gesture/honour to him by his hosts. I do not think it was supposed to be a planned provocation even though there are people who feel this to be a provocation to them.

it has become such a routine situation that it is tiring of mentioning and discussing. turkey did its part and our goverment will do theirs. just like the time before and the time before that.

at least the media will have something to discuss.

Although I try to steer a middle ground on most things, I think this was an unnecessary and provocative act on the part of the Turkish government (who must have sanctioned this). As a lifelong watcher of F1, I can't remember a similar situation where a foreign 'head of state' has been invited to present a winning trophy. This was designed to cause maximum ire in Cyprus and should be seen as a childish and spiteful slap in the face not only for Greek Cypriots, but also for the EU, which is pressuring Turkey to move on Cyprus.

I once had high hopes for Mr. Erdogan as a new type of Turkish leader, but it seems he's no better than many of his predecessors. I very much doubt that the FIA will be too impressed by this move either.

I only thought it was comical!
Anyhow, I would suggest to the otherwise sympathetic Mr. Talat to stop listening too much to those responsible for his PR and image making campaign, and to concentrate more in the essence, which is to try and work harder and find ways to solve the Cyprus problem, and live the PR gimmicks aside as he will have plenty of time after a solution to pose as much as he wants as one of the political figureheads of a re-united Cyprus. The Turkish Cypriots are not stupid people to be fooled around with such desperate and comical set-ups, which will solve none of their problems in the end of the day but they are only a waste of their time and are only meant to disorient them from the real issues.

I didn't watch the race or the presentation so i did not know what had happend , so thank you to you all for giving us all a bit of info !
To the point, Mr talat is being very naieve if presenting trophy's is going to give himself any more credebility, I agree he should spend more time trying to get Tpap to see eye to eye with him but i am afreaid that is politics and it is all a game with them.

Sezer is currently busy planning the next coup with the army, and the AKP government boycotted the event, as there were women there without headscarves...

Sorry everyone allthough i agree with a lot that has been written on this post, i can't see where the word PROVOCATIVE has a place here.
He is just trying to manipulate the situation for his own gain and look it has had the desired effect. Personally i think he is a little fish swimming around in a big Ocean and eventually he will get swallowed up by an even bigger fish.
A very famous politician in the UK once said that there is no bad publicity, all Publicity is good publicity. The reaction of TPAP gov was expected and Talat is laughing again at them because the stir it has caused has highlighted him once again.

FIA official press release

2006 TURKISH GRAND PRIX
PODIUM CEREMONY
29.08.2006

The FIA has launched a full investigation into the circumstances in which Mr Mehmet Ali Talat was invited to present the winner’s trophy at the 2006 Turkish Grand Prix.

Political neutrality is fundamental to the FIA’s role as the governing body of international motor sport. No compromise or violation of this neutrality is acceptable.

The results of the investigation will be presented to the FIA World Motor Sport Council.

Quote: Cyprus outrage at Talat F1 stunt
By Leo Leonidou
(archive article - Tuesday, August 29, 2006)
THE GOVERNMENT yesterday expressed outrage after Turkish Cypriot leader Mehmet Ali Talat unexpectedly made an appearance during the podium ceremony of Sunday’s Turkish Grand Prix in Istanbul.

The government will protest “the unacceptable and provocative theatrical performance organised by Ankara, with Talat as the leading actor and will call on the F?d?ration Internationale de l’Automobile (FIA), the governing body of world motor sport, to react to this kind of behaviour,” Government Spokesman Christodoulos Pashardis said............
............. full article
Quote: During the ceremony, in which Talat presented the winner’s trophy to Ferrari’s Brazilian driver, Felipe Massa, Talat was announced as, “the President of the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus,” .....

Actually I did not read what was written on the screen where they usually show the titles of the persons concerned, but the German TV presenters did not mention the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus, but instead called him what I stated in my previous post: 'representative of the area'.

I don't know if that was out of ignorance or trying not to be offensive. :?:

I think I have found the answer at last to the Cyprus Problem. Put all the bloody politicians in F1 cars and let the buggers race for a solution, the order in which they finish allows them to demand one concession from the other side. Probably 20 from each side would be enough, the older the better- can you imagine Denky and Clearideas battling it out for the lead at 40mph!
