I'm talking about George Galloway who people say was cosy with Saddam Hussein in an attempt to discredit him. Let me remind you that the whole western word backed Saddam at one point. Many mayors gave him keys of their city, including the mayor of Chicago!

George Galloway on Sky news.

On watching it ... you can say that again! William Hazlitt puts it brilliantly (On Success):

Quote: How often do we see vivacity and impertinence mistaken for wit; fluency for argument; sound for sense; a loud or musical voice for eloquence!

If anythijng he is bad publicity for Lebanon. He is annecessarily aggressive with the reporter whom he calls "stupid".
If his purose was to invoke sympathy for the people who suffer in Lebanon he has failed miserably. He has only provoked more antipathy.

whatever you say about him or his personality, I still agree with his points and I believe his tone is very appropriate for the situation.

bg_turk i totally disagree with your point about "bad publicity for Lebanon". Can you explain how he is bad publicity? If anything he raises awareness:

- Western media are not "free" but biased
- Israel has been "messing" with Lebanon for a long time
- USA gives Israel weapons same as Iran giving Lebanon weapons but only one party is lebaeled "terrorist"

The retorts to that are:

1. The "unbiased media report" is about as likely as the "objective scientific report". GG makes the same error as indymedia; it believes that the mainstream media are biased, or deliberately ignoring stories, so it biases its reports N times more in the opposite direction, or publishes all manner of unverifiable material ...

2. Indeed, but so has Hezbollah, Syria and probably others, specifically Iran, at further remove. I get the feeling that we are watching two glove puppets fighting; Israel with the USA moving the fingers to some extent, and Lebanon with a whole group of entities doing the same.

3. True, but Israel is on "our" side and Hezbollah is on "their" side and it was ever so. Could you imagine the Daily Mail, for example, ever reversing that differentiation?

(And it depends who you are; Any Questions was amusing last night for Jonathan Dimbleby getting into a tremendous lather and inserting the word "alleged" whenever "terrorist plot" was said by one of the participants. Many (most?) other media would not have such inhibitions; the US authorities, for one, seem to have no concept of sub judice and say whatever they want to say ...)

He raises awareness in a very bad way. It is counterproductive.

bg_turk, OH MY GOODNESS!! That documentary blew me away! It doesn't scare me because in Cyprus (and Europe in general) we are the complete opposite to this state of affairs, but it still surprised me and woke me up a little. Thanks for that vid.

These truths we hold to be self-evident!

Indeed, it shows the unbelievable feebleness of the US media; I read quite a few RSS feeds from American newspapers and "distant" and "smug" come immediately to mind on reading stories. (Hurricane Katrina briefly weke it up and - good heavens - the US government was actually criticised, but slumber soon intervened).

I must admit that, every time an Israeli spokesman opens his mouth on BBC Radio 4 and a near-perfect "American" accent emerges, a few percentage points are knocked off my approval rating

Well I did laugh when an Israeli spokesman, asked why Israel had failed to achieve anything, stated they were fighting one of the most sophisticated armies in the world (Hezbollah). Note this is the army who uses rockets from world war 2...

Khan cim: The Israelies did achieve somethings. They achieved to terrorize a nation that has 16 friggin helicopters as an air force, they achieved to kill 1000 civillians, 250 of them being innocent children. They were successful in proving that Israel is one of the biggest bullies on the planet.

....and the sad thing is that George Pusht gave them the green light. John Wayne mentality. The sorry sob never even left the country before he became president. Does that remind you of some of the mustacheoed Petes that run some of our villages in Turkey and in Cyprus?
