I'm a budding amateur genealogist and am very interested in doing my fiance's family tree. I've traced my tree back to 1700s (boring people didn't move from London from now back to then!)

Any ideas where I could start or if there are any genealogy websites that would be useful for Cypriots? I think it's going to be way too hard and probably would involve visits to places in Cyprus itself.

I just thought as I've done so much of mine, if I ever have kids, it'd be nice for them to see where they came from.

Thanks!

My aunte is trying to do this for us...but cos we are from the north, during 1974, a lot of the loical village documents of birth certificates(which were not part of the main archive i think) were lost/destroyed./....so she has had to do a lot of it by word of mouth...

dunno about any good sites, but i suppose your best bet is with the government files....but beware...cypriot families are notoriously big ;)

plus the surnames of people changed all the time, as discussed in another thread, so tracing who from who may be particularly difficult the further back you go.

good luck tho!

The Greek cypriot's probably would not be pleased to learn that they all come from the ottomans, so they probably would not want to find out this kind of info, Unless they can tell you which Cave they all hid in for 400 years to stay pure from the Ottomans. Maybe it was the same Cave that Lord Lucan Currently lives in

I'm going to run this one past my father in law and see his reaction! My mother in law thinks her family originate from the Greek islands. I think this is going to be too hard a task to do anyways (the surname thing poses a problem - I know my father in law had a different surname when he arrived in England).

Don't be so proud - us English are nothing but a mongrel race!!!

Don't be so hard on yourself, most people if not all on this planet are a mongrel race especially cypriots after being conquered by every super power of the time on the planet through its entire history.

Have you people ever considered the fact of going around and calling random people mongrels could possibly be insulting? Or is the idea of being compared to a dog of undetermined parents, something that a 'modern person' should indulge in polite conversation?

I mean, we are no racial purists or something and accepting a certain level of ethnic intermarriages is granted.. but mind your language people!

Dream i can agree with you here about the insults but those were not meant as insults imo. it was just an easy way of mentioning how mixed everyone is.

I wasn't trying to offend (and was only insulting my own race anyway!) I just dislike it when English people go on about being "pure" and Great British - when most of us are descended from French, Italian, Jewish, Irish blah blah blah (me included!) And I suppose all races are combined of more than one race no matter how pure they like to think they are!

This was just my way of one day showing my kids their ancestry - 300 years of market traders in Bethnal Green....and how many years of village life in Cyprus...?

Please don't start arguing again.... :?

I know they were not intended as insults, but still, it sounds extremely ugly, EVEN if the person is refering to himself.

Not really - but perhaps as the person I am, I am not as sensitive to such insults as you. Because of the way I look I've been regarded as "wrong" all my life by most white people - the whole human race is a bunch of mongrels - lighten up!!!

The mixture of all the races gives the world its colour, otherwise it would just be white and the rest of the world

Eh this is what I was afraid of.

Why do you need to drag racism into this?

OK, one thing for sure.. no need to make a big deal out of this. Feel free to call each other with whatever epithets you prefer... just don't go around making sweeping generalisations.
