"Police officers were out in force but any fears of violence proved ungrounded as the game finishing without the slightest incident."

I prefer to look at this bit of the article, it gives me hope.....:)

In short, one can argue the political issue, the constitutional issue, etc, etc, but still be part of the Cyprus Football Federation.

One could also argue that allowing a team from the North to play one from the South, without requiring the team in the north to accept the authority over them of the Cyprus fedration, would not actualy change the Republic of Cyprus ability to argue it's case. Or so it seems to me.

Either you are a member of the CFF or you are not, or a member of another "FIFA" Federation.

I was there - it was an absolutely electric evening...

The shouting was imho not worse then when Greek Cypriot teams meet... it can be pretty gross then too.

Still, when a Famagusta team is the underdog playing a Turkish team, at home, you can imagine that when the Turkish supporters started to roll out a rather large Turkish flag... it became quite noisy... I think it was just before the match when the supporters anyway always are fighting their own screeming match...

In general though there was no sign of violence, etc, and in that sense more peaceful than a normal Nicosia derby. In entering and elaving the arena I felt people were really careful to make sure there were no ugly incidents.

There are also a few people who still resent the ethnic cleansing etc etc etc

We need to get rid of all these people so as to try to live in harmony

In the UK it is illegal to make racist comments at any match or anywhere else.

To make verbal threats like that at a sports event shows that there is a long way to go to solving the problem.

Hey 100% Cypriot, you can kind of understand why people resent the ethnic cleansing...although of course I do not believe that people should racially abuse one and other...thankfully it seems it was only a small number of people took part.....

It's great that there's a law to stop people making such racist comments, but unfortunately it still happens...annoyingly...:(

R u sure ?

I didn't think that there was an embassy in Turkey for cyprus

I could be wrong !!

First don't shout. If Kifeas does not answer you, take your problems with him in private message. We need not tolerate your temper.

The Republic of Cyprus recognises the Republic of Turkey. This it has done so since the Republic of Cyprus's foundation in 1960. The reason why there are no diplomatic ties is mostly due to the fact that Turkey no longer recognises the Republic of Cyprus as the sole legal authority over the entire island, and hence undermines the legality of the Republic of Cyprus to exist. This is due to the events of 1974 following to 1983. ( If I am not mistaken Turkey took this stance upon the founding of the so called Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus ).

There are many countries that do not have embassies and consulates in another country. This is mostly due to the non-existant ties between the countries or for strategically political reasons.

Hi 100%cypriot, ok, you did not shout by using capital letters, but using bold and large fonts appears to be about the same. I believe you will not attract more readers or more interest by doing so. Hence it would be nice if you could just use the standard font. Thank you for your understanding.

With the summer tennis season upon us how about a Cypriot mixed doubles team? This is what we used to do at School during the summer - my doubles partner was a 6ft 2 giant called Yiannis - as always we had varied opinions about the politics of our Island (who doesn't?) but we gave the other kids what for on the tennis courts of North London :) Plus lunchtimes were equally memorable sharing the food the other's Yia Yia or Nene had packed them off to school with :)
