It depends on the 'crap' that is comming up as to how you stop it.

One thing you can try is to start -> run -> msconfig

and then select the the startup tab. From here you can 'turn on and off' various programms that run at startup , one or more of whihc may or may not be the offender.

Basially could prob give more specific suhhestions if I had a better idea what the 'srap' that comes up is ?

Download WinPatrol from : http://www.winpatrol.com/

You can disable and re-enable startup progs at will.

It's also an intrusion detector, atsk manager and other essential things.

It's a great little prog and it's free unless you want to buy the Plus version.

thanks eric. does thing slow up your computer though. im having problems with my pc because it takes a good 2-3 minutes for the shut down options (log off/ turn off/ restart) to take in effect after i select "turn off computer" on the start bar. and the longer ihave my pc on the longer it takes. iwonder if winpatrol would help that.

It might pay you to have a look at windows task manager to see what services are running. Try shutting them down manually to see which one is giving you grief.

A great package for this is Process Explorer, which can replace Task Manager and gives a lot more information about each running process (the mini-graphs of resources used over time are really useful).

Autoruns finds absolutely everything that starts up - more than msconfig, although that displays the "obvious" locations.

Once you have deleted the startup entries, Startup Monitor helps stop them coming back! (Some packages, such as Real and QuickTime, insist on putting back deleted entries).

It might. Slow shutdown is awkward because it is often hard to find out where the problem is - shutdown is far less controlled than startup.

The best troubleshooter I have come across is Windows XP Shutdown Troubles, which shows the scale of the problem. (I had shutdown taking ages until I installed new drivers for the built-in WiFi card, which cleared the problem).
