The Tamil want Taksim in Sri Lanka. Supported by the powerful neighbour, India, which is sympathetic to the Tamil minority (decendants of Indian settlers from some centuries ago), Tamil Tigers seem increasingly like to establish a new state in the North of Sri Lanka:

i dont know much about the sri lankan problem, but i guess that the tamils have always been a majority in the north which means the imposition of the 'annan plan' to sri lanka would be more likely to work, than n cyprus, where history dictates that we have been mixed.

good luck to them tho...lets hope peace reaches at least some parts of the world, even if we cant sort ourselves out.

Some interesting parallels between the two situations... but as ever... it's hard to compare directly...

once i participated in a game based on the sri lanka model. ofcource we didnot know which country it was , it appeared to be a fantasy land. the story was about a once ruling minority being later one oppresed by the majority , attrocities from both sides etc etc.
it was amazing that by just reading two pages of an "imaginary" scenario, the german students got into their roles in less than 15 minutes!!!
the majority refused any power sharing model and didnot trust the minority.
the minority was afraid of its security and wanted autonomy.

all i could think of is that stupidity is a human characteristic.

I dont see Cyprus in its current state as a model for any other trouble spot.
