Are you seriously suggesting that the bulk of the Cypriot people will not be disillusioned with war crimes?

What would you say if a plan was provided which mirrored the constitution of a free democratic and pluralist country with minority/affirmative action rights for the Turks.

The people who become disillusioned with such a democratic model support crimes such as war crimes at the highest level. These disillusioned people are criminals my friend.

War crimes cannot be the foundation upon which attempt to resolve the Cyprus issue. This is perhaps the reason that the Cyprus problem will not be solved until :

1) Turkish Cypriot victims or their surviving families are provided with individual remedies and counseling. The 800 or so victims or their families should receive very generous assistance. It would be very realistic to give these people $500,000 or even more for their loss and pain and suffering. I'll would personally donate money into a fund for this even though I was born more than 20 years after the inter-communal strife and my family has never had any involvement in any area of politics, Eoka or any of that crap.

2) Greek Cypriots are provided with individual remedies for any war crimes they have suffered. Namely ethnic cleansing, Obviously restitution will have to be the remedy in some cases and proper compensation in others. I consider that if the compensation is particularly generous in cases where restitution is difficult then solution would be far more successful.

Both groups of victims are the last people greasy politicians should ask to shoulder the burden of solution without any benefit.

This lengthy step by step process is being pursued and may take a couple of generations but if adequate individual remedies are provided then a significant amount of goodwill between the two groups will be restored.

If these individual victims are properly and fairly provided with adequate remedies then neither side will dare use the innocent victims of conflict as a pretext or subterfuge for unhelpful propaganda.

Can a lasting solution be found while the wounds are left to fester? No, the only firm foundation of a lasting solution will be to remedy the individual victims- then lets see how easy it will be to find a solution.

Very interesting comments. serve the victims first. As for compensation, let me have my land back and let me decide what to do with it. Cantons will serve whole communities to rebuild a fabric of cooperation that exsisted before open hostility. They will serve the needs of tens of thousands, people from both communities who resettle. Such developments, island wide will serve both communities toward the development of strong and self sustaining diversity, in their culture. As well, "mixed" communities, are their most likely outcome.

Very interesting signature, I too remember this act of responsibility, and I hope it is a valuable consideration to Turkey, who
