|
|
Quote: A DEMILITARISED NICOSIA will enable
- the demilitarisation of the island;
- reunification of the island;
- transferring the no man’s land to an area used by everyone;
- using no man’s land for social and cultural purposes;
- opening dead ends to ease the traffic flow;
- discussing the military camps in other cities and villages;
- ending the military ceremonies encouraging chauvinism and hatred;
- inter communal trust through the process of solution.
Therefore, I support the demilitarisation of Nicosia.

Very nice idea but unfortunately ...not feasible before a final solution, for many reasons! There are some 150,000 mainland Turks (settlers, register and non register workers, etc,) currently living and /or working in the north. Who will keep them from not crossing to the south if the entire Nicosia center becomes completely open and unguarded? Furthermore and from the other side's perspective, what will be the use of the check points and the passport controls by the T/C side, if everyone will be able to use the hundreds of streets in the old Nicosia to cross north and south, without even been noticed? |

Then what kind of demilitarization is going to be? There are tens of streets connecting the north and south Nicosia center. Just take a map and look at it. If all the armies and the road blocks are removed, it means that every single little road becomes an entry /exit pass from /to north /south Nicosia center and from then on to the entire of Nicosia and Cyprus. How is it going to be controlled? |

Kifeas is right. As long as there are 2 seperate areas. Republic of Cyprus and the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus 'state' there must be some border controls.
Maybe allow more and easier access but dont open the entire border. Its unsafe |

Perhaps we should ask Zambellas if he is willing to allow the checkpoints and the army road blocks to be erected in Solomou, Eleftherias and Oxi squares, outside the walls. :? |

exactly CTD.
if you see the Greek Cypriot supporters are mostly yes-supporters.
it is mostly to show, that some people still care and are willing to do something about it. i dont think they are so optimist that they can convince pap or talat to have no control between north and south.
any effect that this petition can have , can only be positive |

Boys I agree with the de militarization of Nicosia and have signed it and suggested Rebuilding the walls around Nicosia to how they where 1000 years ago: They will look AWESOME:
Imagine driving toward Nicosia and seeing there Huge walls like: TROY or Ayers Rock or Lord of the Rings:
It will also make a great Wind Break and a Tourist attraction:
What do you think? |
