Voice of Blood II: Searching for Selten
Screening followed by discussion with the director

Thursday 2 March 2006, 6pm
Room 0228, UEL Docklands Campus*

Voice of Blood II is a powerful film testimony to the fate of victims of conflict in Cyprus. It has received critical acclaim – even among those challenged by its images and conclusions.

Tony Angastiniotis is a Greek Cypriot who has undertaken an unusual journey – an attempt to understand what happened to Turkish Cypriots in 1974 when Cyprus was divided by military conflict and mass refugee movements. Survivors hitherto unable to tell their stories reveal much about the events – raising questions about “official” histories and their role in shaping ideas about the past and the present.

This film is about war, displacement and memory: it is also an important contribution to peace and reconciliation in Cyprus.

The Refugee Research Centre invites you to this premiere and to join Tony Angastiniotis in a discussion chaired by John Nassari.

* Docklands Campus is adjacent to Cyprus Station on the Docklands Light Railway

The Workers Democracy or "Ergatiki Democratia" is a political movement that used to be the so-called far left wing of the socialist (social-democrat) EDEK party, which was eventually banned from the party for being against the party's official rhetoric and promoted instead a pan-leftist merge of EDEK with AKEL. It is a group of no more than aproximatelly 200 individuals who, after the opening of the illegal checkpoints that the occupational regime in the north has done in 2003, are more into by-communal activism rather than internal G/C political activism.

Since the occupation is illegal, the "boarder" is also illegal, and consequently the "check points" are also illegal! The Greek Cypriot check points are not checkpoints as such but observation posts to prohibit the infiltration of illegal settlers /immigrants in Cyprus the passing by of products illegally imported in Cyprus. They are not check-points separating two bordering countries but entry points into the controlled territory of the Republic of Cyprus, from the illegally occupied territory of the Republic of Cyprus.

Observation post, I think it goies beyond that. Entry point, yes but it is an exit point too!

They prohibit (or check) the infiltration of settlers, they check passports, they check the boot of cars, they check peoples identity and purpose of travel etc. it sounds like check points to me.

The issue here is:

Quote: ... an attempt to understand what happened to Turkish Cypriots in 1974 when Cyprus was divided by military conflict and mass refugee movements. The last two lines of the above are crucial as far as I am concerned. I wonder how much truth there is in them and how many people have fallen victim to the lies we were brought up with.
