Another digitised book, on blackmask, dating from 1901, and containing several chapters on Cyprus at the turn of the 20th century.
(H Rider Haggard was a prolific writer, very well-known in his time, but now forgotten) |

Well, I tried to summarise it and couldn't, so the only way is to read it. No wonder the author was so popular in his time - he is an excellent writer. Not one word wasted!
One thing I do notice about Victorian books on Cyprus is a fascination with taxation; the island's incomings and outgoings are given in great detail, which is a rather strange thing to put in the middle of travel writing. No idea why ... |
