Quote: A sad turn of events
THE THUGS who slashed the tyres of a dozen cars parked outside the Melina Mercouri concert hall, during a bi-communal event last month, struck again on Monday night. Four cars had their tyres slashed while their owners were attending an event dedicated to Turkish Cypriot poetry at Famagusta Gate. Two of the cars had Turkish Cypriot number plates and another belonged to the Bulgarian ambassador who was also attending the event.
This time, the government and all the political parties immediately condemned the vandalism, attributing it to extremist elements that did not respect democracy and wanted to drive the two communities apart. It was an improvement, given that last month it took the authorities more than 48 hours to condemn the thugs, creating a very bad impression. But the issuing of a politically correct announcement is not the end of the government’s responsibility.
What action had been taken to stop the hooligans? Why were there no policemen in the Famagusta Gate area, given what had happened a few weeks earlier? The police spokesman said that the organisers had not informed the force about the event; had they done so there would have been a police presence.
Nobody expects the police to monitor every bi-communal event that is being organised and send officers along, but the government could not have been unaware of the event or the prospects of a problem. Ministers would have received invitations and could have informed the police.
If they thought that the hooligans would not strike again, they were proved wrong. From now on, organisers of bi-communal events should always request police protection, because the extremists cannot be allowed to sabotage rapprochement efforts.

| The government has a lot to answer for. When the thugs struck for the first time, the government stayed silent for almost 48 hours. This is because the event was organised by DISI. When the government was criticised by the opposition, they came up with a cheap excuse of the kind "the government spokesman was sick in bed" and while he was telling this excused, Lillikas coughed twice! |

I know it was a joke Khan, and an ill conceived one I may add!
Not only I am not against bi-communal activities, but i have also taken part in some of them. I think you will make much more sense if instead of my name; you replace it with that of Viewpoint or Dayi or even your very own!
It seems that you do not read what each one is writing in this forum all the time, and who is in favor of re-unification and who is against it and favors partition instead, or you must have some disability in comprehending what you read! |

| Kifeas may be a bit left field sometimes, but despite previous taunts, I don't think he is a member of Xrysi Avgi... I think it's most likely a few of those nutcases who did this... |

They could easily be Turkish Cypriot you know, because it happened in the south automatically we ASSUME that they are Greek Cypriot. |

Why Moose? Didn't they cross to the south about a year ago and murdered that T/C banker, his wife and daughter, and then crossed back to north again? |
