Quote: Stop the War Coalition-Cyprus
OUR COMMON PAIN UNITES US
Greek and Turkish Cypriots together, let us make war and barbarism history.
The crimes and atrocities committed in Cyprus by each side against the innocent victims of the other side are “common knowledge” which everyone knows but prefer to ignore. The official side of each community has its own slogan “We don’t forget” and chooses to remind everyone only the crimes committed by the ‘opponent’ side while ‘forgetting’ the crimes committed by its own side.
For years the nationalists of both communities try to use the human suffering and tragedy inflicted upon thousands of Greek and Turkish Cypriots in order to nourish the feelings of hatred and division.
Thousands of Greek and Turkish Cypriots were divided by an abyss filled with pain and blood as a result of foreign interventions, wars and nationalism. The pain and tragedy, however, is common. There is no difference between the broken heart of a Turkish mother and that of a Greek mother. We should make our common pain the foundation for peace and fraternization in place of hatred and division. Together we can make war and barbarism history.
Working towards this direction, Stop the War Coalition-Cy, organises a screening of two documentaries which reveal some of the crimes committed against the ordinary people of both communities.
This way we wish to show that ordinary people of each side acknowledge and apologise for the crimes committed by their ruling class against the other community. We want this event to act as an antidote against the poison of hatred and chauvinism instilled in the new generation.
This event is dedicated to Ozger Ozgur, the Turkish Cypriot fighter for peace and democracy in Cyprus, who died recently.
4th of February, Saturday from 6:30 - 9:30pm
Arabahmet Cultural Centre

PS
I am given to understand that this is somewhat 'historic' event, as it will be the first time a documentary about Turkish atrocities in Cyprus will be screened in the North |
