Cypriot Super Cup
SUPER OMONIA CLAIM SILVERWARE
ANORTHOSIS 2 OMONIA 2 (1-1 AT 90mins, Omonia win 5-4 on pens)
The first trophy of the season went to the cup holders Omonia as they defeated the champions Anorthosis in a penalty shoot-out to claim the Super Cup. The 10,000 spectators at the GSP Stadium in Nicosia saw Omonia recover from going behind early on to level and force extra-time. The Greens went on to take the lead before a late goal took the match into penalties. The crowd were treated to a fast flowing, attacking game which kept them on the edge of their seats right until the final kick. It was Anorthosis who burst from the blocks and raced into the lead in the 2nd minute. With their first attack, Anorthosis were awarded a free kick wide on the right. Georgi Klinkladze whipped in the ball to Nikos Frousos who rose unchallenged to head beyond the outstreatched hand of Demetris Leoni and into the net via the inside of the post. For the first ten minutes of the game Anorthosis were rampant and refused to let Omonia settle. The champions couldn't keep the fast pace up and gradually Omonia worked themselves back into the match. In the 13th minute Jozef Kozlej teed up Musawengosi Mguni but the Zimbwabian striker totally missed the ball. The Greens continued to put pressure on the Anorthosis defense and squandered an even better opportunity on 16 minutes. Nicolaos Georgiou's low cross from the left fell to George Vakouftsis who failed to connect. The ball continued through to Gabor Korolovszky who drilled a shot inches wide of Zoltan Nagy's near post. Omonia were getting closer and only a fine save by Nagy from Kostas Kaifas's stinging drive prevented Omonia equalizing in the 20th minute. The tide had completely turned from the opening minutes as Omonia surged forward. The Anorthosis defense was under increasing pressure and finally buckled in the 35th minute. Georgiou centered for Vakouftsis to dispatch a solid header past the the exposed Nagy. The half time interval gave the supporters time to catch their breath in this pulsating game. The second half was somewhat of an anti climax, littered with substitutions and yellow cards. The pace of the game dropped with chances at a premium. It wasn't until the game reached stoppage time that Anorthosis could have snatched the trophy. Nikos Nikolaou tried his luck from distance only to see his effort blocked by Leoni. A minute later and Leonidas Kampantais headed wide much to the relief of the Omonia fans. The tempo rose once more during the extra-time period. Anorthosis almost regained the lead in the 96th minute but for a last ditch tackle by Michail Papaioannou on Frousos at the expense of a corner. The Greek forward had been played in by Nikolaou and found himself one-on-one with Leoni and about to shoot until the intervention of Papaioannou. With the game 100 minutes old, Omonia took the lead in controversial fashion. Kaifas took a corner from the right and Mguni seemed to head the ball and make contact with the on-rushing Nagy at the same time. The ball ended in the back of the net with the Anorthosis players strongly protesting that their goalkeeper had been fouled. Referee Stelios Trifonos turned down the appeals and the goal stood. Two minutes later and parity was almost restored once more. Kampantais arrowed his venomous header goal wards only to see Leoni pull off a spectacular save. The match had yet another twist as Anorthosis made it 2-2 during the second period of extra time. Nikolaou found the head of Frousos from a free kick and the forward made no mistake and send the match into penalties. Marco Haber was the villain for Anorthosis as he had his spot kick saved by Leoni. It was left to Kaifas to stroke in the final penalty as Omonia clinched their 14th Super Cup.
Hope you like. Goes in this weeks paper. Editor and I are Omonia supporters so he should be pleased!
