I 'bash' any ISP (and have done many tinmes in the past) that forces it's users to use a proxy and that proxy stops any application from working properly.

This was years ago (and I was not even an NTL customer then or ever). Thought the petition did not exactly 'take off' it has to be said. Even today if you look at NTL consumer forums, proxy problems STILL cause many problems for many NTL users.

I would also add that when Crash had problems accessing the talkcyprus forum through an ISP that uses NTL to porivde their service, walking him through changing the 'enforced' NTL proxy to an alternate one fixed these problems.

Proxies are bad news. They cause problems and get in the way. I dont like them and never will. They are also based on a false premise that 'bandwidth' is an scarce resource. Might be true in Cyprus, I dont know but its not true in the UK.

I would love to chop it down, but I fear if I did the ECHR may demand that I put it back up again in a few years time, when they make me return the land to its orgianl state and owner :)

Actually its not on the land my house is on anyway, but next door.

Unfortunately, if you are a Cyprus ISP and want international bandwidth, you have to go through Cyta or through a consortium of national telephony providers that includes Cyta. That's because they "control" all international submarine cables. For this reason alone, bandwidth is expensive in Cyprus.

FYI, the satellite alternative is no good, not only because it's not nearly as reliable.

Reliablilty is not a problem with my sat system as far as I am concerned. It is very stable and reliable and pretty much comprable with the UK providers I have used (DSL based).

What is a problem for me is the cost, capital equipment and monthly rental, and the high latency that is inevitable with 2 way sats systems.

I mean reliability for ISPs. A 30 minute outage every couple of months is nothing for a home user, but if you have thousands of subscribers depending on it, it quickly becomes very, very important.

er not that there is much to see, as its dark now. Can see the door to hallway reflected in the window - thats about it.

I can't see anything either..it's not dark or anything, it simply doesn't load the image.

It appears we have had sporadic power cuts throughout the night and this is probably the reason why it was not showing. Should be working again now
