I was reading through the magazine attached to Cyprus Mail and came across this article. While I was in Cyprus recently, I was disturbed at the number of stray and obviously uncared-for dogs walking around in a shocking state. I had course to 'save' one of these poor creatures by getting a relative to take it in and look after it.
What dismays me most is that the local authorities in Cyprus don't seem to give a monkeys about this problem and regard the only solution either as letting them continue to roam or through euthanasia. Reading through the article it also seems that they make promises to organisations doing their best to look after these poor creatures and then don't fulfill on them. I know it's the same the world over, but I was quite disturbed at the laissez-faire attitude when it comes to stray animals on the island and people's general view that they don't have a responsibility for them. The problem seems to be that people want 'fashionable' dogs, i.e. those they can stick in their Prada handbag and parade on Makarios Avenue, or large, prestige dogs like Huskies that have a terrible time in the Cyprus summer.
All I can say is thank God for organisations like this one:
