Quote: Increasingly, land is what Cypriot speculators seek, not property. Andreas Foutas, an estate agent with 35 years' experience in the Pissouri area, tells me that, while property prices have levelled off in the past 18 months (and are likely to remain that way for the next couple of years), land prices will continue to rise at 15 per cent per annum "because of the scarcity of areas with building permission".

Yes, this is absolutely true.

Prime reasons are restrictions introduced by the department of housing and planning throughout the 90s, along with a quite large building spree that happened during the years before the EU accession.

Rubbish... it's because it is a mostly mountainous country with an extremely dense population. As a consequence, in the areas where people can (and want to) live, there is a huge demand for land which results in price inflation.

Are you really saying that because Madagascar or Greenland or Ireland are islands that the price of land is naturally high?
