What my grandfather said is learning a language is like learning a degree:
look at the people of Lebanon and Alexandria who spoke 7 languages:
Cyprus has a very good opportunity to speak Fluent Greek, Fluent Turkish and Fluent English:
When I was in Cyprus in 1979 I have a Swedish girlfriend and I was with her for three weeks and we didn't have one work in common BUT in the everning in the hotel room man how did she know what I wanted?
Amazing? |

Yes we do have our own unique identity:
well said.
i couldn't say about turkey,
but knowing Greek and English lifestyle and system very well
I clearly see that Cyprus is a better version of both.(Or possibly all three)
As for the Turkish learning, of course i would. |

i completely agree with what all of you have said about the learning of Greek Turkish and English. I think its vital and i think ive said this before in other posts but I really do believe that learning different languages allows someone to deepen their knowledge in the culture and so this could only produce positive results in a country like Cyprus.
Also-think about how advanced the children would be, learning three languages from an early age! I learn three languages other than English and it really opens your mind and makes your brain think in a different way. |

| Look at Switzerland many people speak German, french and Italian fluently: What we have is very unique because with Cyprus how many Cypriots live in England and how many know Greek and how many Turkish: It will also be great when eventually everyone became European and wish to establish businesses in Turkey or Turkish ?Cypriots wanting too establish businesses in Greece: What would be great is for TV programs that screen English is to have Greek & Turkish subtitles and Greek program to have English & Turkish subtitles and for Turkish program to have English & Greek subtitles: |

I would definitely learn Turkish (I want to in the future anyway), but the problem is I would not want any of the languages to lose its 'base'.

i think that if cypriots were to know greek, english and turkish, we could be one of the richest countries in the world...imagine, our trade , with just greek and turkish would be to over 100m people!
An being in the EU, turkish speakers would be a neccessity...for translation etc... , and to all the 'turkic' states which is closely related to turkish...that must be a lot more countries that cyprus could trade with more effectively, as well as being in the EU.
English, well, that is obviously a good thing...its the most used language in business (USA/Canada/Britain etc...) so it cant be a bad thing! |

English taught as a main language. Greek/Turkish would be spoken at homes meaning little time is needed to teach it. The other language we be taught at schools.
Eg. Mr Greek Cypriot will be schooled in English, Would be taught/picked up greek of his community and then he will learn Turkish as another language.
when i learnt a second language the course was wasted. I think the focus should be on speaking not writing. |

I agree. All lessons in english...so that Turkish Cypriots and Greek Cypriots can learn together.... but when they do their language classes (of greek/turkish), they split off...Greek Cypriots to learn turkish , and visversa. |

completely disagree.
you cannot have main language english.
english is a necessity, but better start with greek and turkish.
they also dont have to split if they mix at kindergarten age. if you take advantage of the age 2-6 and let them mix, you ll have ready billinguals, to attend a billingual school...after a while they start with english.
where bilingual schools dont exist... each learns his own language, and then the language of the other first. then follows english. this way i like it better :) |
