The big question on my mind is, well..actually my maronite lady helped out with this one, some of it is her idea,

Should the Turkish-Cypriots reserve a seat in their parliament for an elected Maronite? of course I mean elected by the Maronite population of Northern Cyprus.

I believe this should not be a mere representative as in the South but a MP who should be a member of one of the Turkish-Cypriot political parties.

In addition the Turkish-Cypriot administration should also open a Maronite school whose language of instruction should be Greek and Arabic, we should pay for the education of Maronites and provide a £100 Cyprus pound boursary to every Maronite student (double that in the South) as it is in the South. We could work with the Lebanese govt (via Turkey of course) to get text books etc.

It is our responsiblity after all to look after all our minorities in the north until a solution is found. the absense of a solution is no excuse for inactivity on our part (turk cyps).

I understand the maronites already have a Muktar / Muxtaris but this is somewhat different, its more like a village spokesman and not really an important or official role.

Aren't the Maronites supposed to be the ancestors of the Linopambatzi?

yeh , the maronites are being assimilated into the Greek Cypriot population.

THere are hardly any 'young' maronites in the north anymore...most live in lefcosia (those from kormakitis anyway) and very few speak the arabic/ameraic of their ancestors. Only the old peoiple do.
my maronite friend says that hardly any young maronites speak arabic/aramaic, and very few are difenerent from Greek Cypriots as religion plays a very tiny role in life, for both young Greek Cypriots and young maronites.

The only obvious differences is thet their christian names are not 'hellenic'.

even if they are going through a process of assimilation that doesnt cancel out their right to have an mp. my maronite girlfriend would disagree with you that they are not different to greek cypriots. she is very religious.

oh sorry, im not suggesting that they should be assimilated...im jsut saying that the process is becoming irreversible, if not tackled soon.

By all means, i think they should be 'protected'

I went there lst summer.
It was really scary. These boys started throwing stones at us and we got all these scary looks. The people staying there are turks brought from turkey, and not turkish cypriots. At one point we got really scared because this man almost came and attacked us!
