| On a serious note, this is good to see. I remember for quite a while, and possibly even now, some West Germans denigrated the Ossies and looked down upon them, hopefully this is the beginning of the end of all that. I also hope that, given the attachment of previous leaders to all things that are crippling the German economy, that this generation will begin to move the German economy in a more market-driven direction. |

well, at the moment there is still lots of chaos here, due to all that mentioned changes in SPD leadership and the dificulties this is causing in forming the new grand coalition.
The conservative CDU (Merkels party) is a bit suspicious re. these quick and surprising changes within SPD and the new people it brought to power.
Now noone really nows where the SPD is heading to and the CDU is fearing the SPD could flip more to the left. CDU therefore considers it very difficult to predict SPD policies which they deem necessary to form a stable coalition.
I personally think its not all that positive and I believe it does not make such a big difference whether they are coming from the east or not. They are still part of the existing political system. However I believe Mr. Platzeck to be more down-to-earth and rational as the average politician.
btw, the newspaper they are quoting is the leading yellow press here so I wouldn't give to much on their point of view. |

Is there always this east/west divide in germany?
Obviously ther is the economic/unemplyment divide, but do people refer to themselves as west/east germans...is it such a big thing? |

sorry, Moose, this will have no impact at all. Or maybe only to the worst. Like "now the stupid Ossies are even Chancellor"

What has been announced till now will not have good effects as I can see. Increased VAT will take even more money from average people and therefore not stimulate consumption. The government is currently dealing with a budget gap of 35bn Euro. This has to be covered somehow and as usual the money will be taken from the average citizen.....
If they make the economy more market-driven, as you put it, they will cut short the rights of employees that have been existing and fought for during the last 5 decades. That is the only way to decrease the ancillare wage costs and the unions will probably give their lives to prevent that. |
