When I was looking at the world press photo awards I came accros these images:

1964

Ghaziveram, Cyprus, April 1964. A Turkish woman mourns her dead husband, victim of the Greek-Turkish civil war.

1983

Koyunoren, Eastern Turkey, 30 October 1983. Kezban Özer finds her five children buried alive after a devastating earthquake

2003

An Najaf, Iraq, 31 March 2003. Iraqi man comforts his son at a holding center for prisoners of war.

Pretty depressing :-(

That was the caption from the Cyprus picture. Civil war in Greek is written with different words, literally meaning inter-race war. So, the catch is, if you use English to describe the events that started in December 1963 you could say civil war, a term that describes perfectly well what went on then. However, the Greek term (emfilios polemos) does not seem to fit so well and of course it has never been used and even today if you use it people will wink purposefully at you.

Simply the Greek term does not translate into "civil war" but "war within the same race" ie Greek against Greek or Turk against Turk. Strictly speaking when a Turkish Cypriot kills a Greek Cypriot or the reverse, it is not civil war.

Well if we look at it in the context of cypriots killing other cypriots then it could rightly be regarded as civil war.
