| I remember from the previous forum reading Alex and his T/C college's(sorry don't know his name)survey and findings and they seemed very encouraging.I was just wondering if they have been sent to the people in charge both in Cyprus and the outside world concerning the Cyprus problem and if the have gotten any feedback yet? Also seeing that Annan is afraid to launch a new initiative(unless it is 100% guaranteed it will succeed)and that the rest of the world has other problems to worry about,if this survey can be applied to the Annan plan and have the necessary changes made between the two parties(g/c and t/c)and put to a referendum.T-pap says he will not meet with talat unless there is a specific agenda to discuss, this survey i believe will help set one up. |

Hi Boulio, thanks for bringing up the matter of the surveys.
As it happens, a major publication of the survey findings took place just this week, in a British Parliamentary magazine called the "Friends of Cyprus Report" which goes out to all the parties involved in the Cyprus Problem. (You can find a pdf version of this article at my website, www.CyprusPolls.org )
Having said that, the results have been unofficially circulating since last June - and all the major players have seen them: Greek Cypriot and Turkish Cypriot leadership, Greek and Turkish foreign ministries, EU, UN, US. I spent about two weeks in June doing nothing but visiting political parties and foreign embassies in Cyprus, privately presenting the results to them.
Though a few people have expressed scepticism over the results, and over my methodology, most have taken the survey at face value, and have been using it as a source of information since. The biggest success was probably the mention of the survey by the UN under-Secretary General, at his briefing of the UN Security Council last June regarding the next steps to be taken in Cyprus.
Furthermore, the results were widely publicised, during late July, through the daily press of Cyprus, Greece and Turkey. In Cyprus, Politis and Kibris published the survey, while Radikal published it in Turkey and Kathimerini in Greece.
Reading this morning's Phileleftheros, which says that the US is moving towards a model of "seeking such amendents such that will secure a double Yes", and that they have information regarding how the gap between the two sides can possibly be bridged, I like to think (though I may be deceiving myself) that they have the survey in mind.
Anyhow, much more work is needed on this issue, perhaps research through other modalities such as personal interviews and focus groups, and also "expert teams" who will sit down and flesh out possible alternative solution proposals. |

outstanding Alex,I'm just a little perplexed as two why the two communities at the highest level don't really take a look at your findings and run with them, instead of all the bullshit rhetoric about veto's and embargoes why don't the try to capitalize on these findings and get the process started?I think that if they use theAnnan plan and your survey and come to a agreement it will also be well received from the public of both communities that they actually did it themselves and that some foreign power didn't force it on them
"seeking such amendments such that will secure a double Yes"
if I'm not mistaken Alex wouldn't this constitute copyright infringements by the US State department. |
