Quote: TURKISH forces pointed weapons at UNFICYP troops – including the UNFICYP force commander – who were inspecting an illegal Turkish military construction within the buffer zone two months ago, the UN confirmed yesterday.

The actual link to the story is http://www.cyprus-mail.com/news/main.php?id=22611&cat_id=1
Some of you haven't realized that Cyprus mail is a bit tricky when it comes to website addresses. If you quote the URL: http://www.cyprus-mail.com/news/ the people who look at this discussion tomorrow WILL NOT find the link to the article but will find tomorrows news instead! Imagine I where quoting the URL: "www.talkcyprus.org/forum" so i can link to this particular topic.
As for the story, I have to say that I'm disgusted that a soldier would point a gun at a UN officer!!! Can someone also enlighten me as to why the Turkish Army thought it necessary to build in an area which is STRICTLY off bounds? This situation is quite difficult as many Greek Cypriots see actions of the Turkish Army as being ordered directly from heads of state and not army generals! Greek Cypriots will assume that Turkish Cypriot politicians ordered these illegal activities and once again the trust between the communities is shaken! What a shame! |

| Matsakis went this morning to this newly constructed post in the buffer zone, videoed from a distance by an “ANT1” camera man, and took off the Turkish flag in order to protest in the European parliament about the expansion into the buffer zone, tomorrow, and use the flag as an evidence. |

He's a lucky man to still be alive then... wouldn't a photograph or piece to camera have done? What a silly man. |

Matsakis has always managed to apply "marketing" to better his public image. He once went after the huge antennae at the British bases and gained overnight notoriety in Cyprus. He is obviously doing the same thing again and to be perfectly honest... I totally support him. He is being investigated for stealing antiques, yet such an allegation is ridiculous in my opinion and I'm happy to see our most outspoken Member of Parliament back in action! My only wish is that our current lazy and skittish MP's become more like Matsakis and less like they are now!
Finally... Just to correct all of you. You cannot be shot in the UN buffer zone. IT'S A CEASE-FIRE LINE and no guns are allowed! Had matsakis been shot by Turkish soldiers in front of a camera while in a UN buffer-zone the repercussions would have been swift and detrimental to Turkeys EU prospects! |

But the question beckons why has it taken two days and many people to move all these rare chests, that is not normal for someone to have so many of anything, there does seem to be a lot of question marks about how and why he has obtained them and why so many and what was the purpose of them being there etc. |

It's not just the chests / antiquities issue, he is also under investigation for allegedly blackmailing a police officer, asking for a bribe so that as a coronist he would give a ruling in favor of the police officer, who was himself under investigation for manslaughter.
Ofcourse, according to law "a man is innocent until proven guilty", but I personally believe that in this case there is substance behind these allegations - the evidence is strong, though not necessarily admissible in court. (There are taped conversations of Matsakis and the Police Officer, but taped conversations are not admissible evidence) |

| I wonder how the Turkish media will portray this incident. So far I found no news of it. I do not think they will report it, i guess it must be quite humiliating to have a turkish flag taken down. Turkish nationalists from MHP would be fuming. At least he did not tread or step on it. :D |

Failed politicians always play the nationalist card to earn votes. I know of so many such politicians in Bulgaria for instance, that have nothing constructive to offer, but use nationalism to creat animosity between ethnic turks and bulgars. I think this politicians is trying to follow a similar stratege, and so far it seems to work. He will probably become a national hero, who will ever sue him then, it will be unthinkable. |

| Maybe Matsakis was hoping the Turks would shoot him... then he'd become an instant martyr and charges against him would be sidelined. Speculation perhaps, but you never know... |

| This idiot put the flag down and made a move as though he was going to tread on it, but then he, probably in a moment of rare sanity, lifted it up and walked away. This is the man that Papadopoulos personally supported to be a European Parliament candidate for DIKO, despite knowing about the police investigations (some time before they became public). Perhaps he was trying to banish him to Brussels where he makes a fool of all Cypriots quite regularly. |
