Pretty much what one would expect. Talat - I want ending of North Cypriot isolation to aid reunifcation propspects. Papadopolus - ending North Cypriot isolation is devisive and hurts propspects of reunifcation.
However I must say I found the last part of this article amusing and kind of bizzare. Its almost like saying 'we ill treat eveyone equally here' :)
Quote: Papadopoulos said he knew of only one specific case before the courts that related to allegations of maltreatment of a Turkish Cypriot. “Reports of ill treatment of Greek Cypriots are far more,” he said.

I think it just once again unequivocally shows that Papadopoulos is the president of Greek Cypriots alone. I know of no other president in europe that would divide his citizens along ethnic lines.
Imagine the French president saying, one arab has died in the recent street classhes, but in general much more french have been killed. Unthinkable. |

Papadopoullos did not justify the beating(s.)
Papadopoullos was asked to comment on a 5 page letter that Talat send to the UN SG, in which among others was accusing the Greek Cypriot community and its leadership of racism and making reference to the beating of Turkish Cypriot in a cafe in the south.
I heard his comments live on Sunday's TV news and all I remember is him saying that he knows of only one or two cases involving the same individual, and these cases are now in front of the courts. He added that he hears many more such cases of beatings among Greek Cypriots every day and also that some Greek Cypriots have been mistreated in the occupied north too, but Talat makes no comments on them.
Why no one of you also comments Talat’s letter and accusations? Is Talat’s reaction a fair one, taking into consideration that for the last 2 ˝ years, between 8-10 thousand Turkish Cypriots cross south, almost every single day? |

I'm not aware of Greek Cypriots being mistreated in the north after the opening of the borders. Can you give us some information on this?
Also, image if Papadopoulos said something like this: "I want to assure my Turkish Cypriot citizens that we will not tolerate any hate crimes inside the borders of the Republic of Cyprus and we will not let a few racist people get in the way of peaceful coexistance and cooperation between the two communities."
Doesn't it sound much better than saying basically "They do the same thing to us" ? |
