Just to let people know
A new version of phpBB has today been released. On a cursory view it would appear to be q pretty major update of the core code in many areas.
I have to say I was' fearing' this happening. The more 'modified' a forum is the harder the task of updating the core code when new releases come out becomes. We have a pretty heavily modified version of the phpBB software.
Anyway I will investigate further what is needed to implement this upgrade and try and come up with a 'plan' for doing it, that hopefuly will minimise any imapct this upgrade might have, as well of course making copious backups of everything before making any changes. |

Spent yesterday modifying 2 boards, one of them giving me major SQL errors because of the modifications but spent an hour fixing it. Then I looked in the admin panel to see that a new version has been released. Took one look at the change files only so that I could keep the mods, and decided to start from scratch........again.
Don't you just hate it when phpBB do that? :( |

Yeah it is frustrating. I thought I had finally got to a point where I could stand back from the mod side of the forum for a few months (it's already gone way beyond anything I ever envisaged when I first set the forum up). Was pretty much there with the 'to do list' and then bang a new version, and not one that can be ignored easily.
Having said all and ahaving gone through the change files it does not look like it is going to be any where near as bad getting this upgrade done, whilst mainting the current mods on the forum, as I first thought. The only real 'clash' I have found so far was with the cracktraker mod and after some very quick responses for the guys who wrote that mod it would seem that these are not really an issue. 2.0.18 basically plugs one of the gaps that CT was plugging in earlier versions (in a different manner) so the bits that clash can actually just be left out.
I will probably have a got at upgrading with the mods in place in the next couple of days. Maybe even tonight / early tomorrow morning. |

sorry, guys, silly question maybe....
Does this update _need_ to be implemented? I mean, just because an update for any SW is available, that doesn't mean I _have_ to upgrade....
Or does it in this case? |

I am sorely tempted to just not bother upgrading, and if I can not get the forum working with the new version that may be the only option.
However if you look at the changes in 2.0.18 and especially the [sec] (security) changes it is hard to ignore this upgrade.
http://www.phpbb.com/phpBB/viewtopic.php?t=336756
gives a list of the changes in this version.
I think I have to give it a try and see what happens. If it all goes bad then we should be able to restore the forum back to how it is now. |

Don't do the SQL bit till you have changed all the files necessery then. If it goes pearshaped, then you want have the traces of 2.0.18 on a 2.0.17 forum.
I've been looking at the script for the change files only, and it says it takes about an hour. Looking at it, I reckon its closer to 2 hours work :(
Personally, I'll be doing a clean install on the testing forum, then adding the mods to the clean install before transfering everything to the active forums.
Guess I'll do mine this weekend. |

It's been a very long and stressful night.
I have updated the forums now to the latest version 2.0.18
Most stuff still seesm to work, at least as far as I can tell. I am still investigating.
If you encounter any problems or strange behaviour please report it here. Thanks you. |
