Have a read of this: http://www.cyprusweekly.com.cy/default.aspx?FrontPageID=304_2
I am not Cypriot, but I have a understanding of where the Turkish Cypriot people are coming from, and what they have experienced, although I believe you can never truly understand what it must have REALLY been like for the people, and what they had to endure unless you were actually there, it must have been hell, they have my full sympathy.
We move on now some 30/40 years and I read that the Greek Cypriots are SCREAMING because a Turkish Cypriot flag has been included in the London Olympic information site, I mean what planet are these people on??????? So much hate even after all this time, why?
It even say’s: Quote: Although small, the “Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus” flag with its characteristic red crescent and star bordered by two parallel lines on a white backdrop can be seen with the naked eye on closer inspection
They talk about settlement, you read about it, you believe it might happen, and then you read a story like this. I don’t think there will ever be a settlement, how can there be when these people are so narrow minded.
I think the Turkish Cypriots have done a fantastic job with there lot in life, it has been hard for them, they have paid a high price for being what they are, and that is not fair.
I mean they even give you step by step instructions on how to view the flag that they don’t want you to see.
Just think Popadop and John Preascotttt were having such a lovely time this week, sucking up to each other, they were so in love, I bet old Popadop will be throwing his toys out of his pram now, I cant wait for his next speech a Laranca airport |

Why did the cyprus weekly not just publish the direct url to the 'offending' image rather than a list of instructions, that will not even be correct as soon as another story relating to Zaha Hadid goes on their site? Weird.
Anyway the 'offending' image can be found here
http://www.london2012.org/en/news/archive/2005/january/2005-01-31-11-20.htm
The Republic of Northern Cyprus flag can not be seen on the image on this page (not with my eyes anyway). It can be seen if you download the hi res version though.
All in all pretty much a storm in a tea cup really imo. A Republic of Northern Cyprus flag was used. It will now undoubtedly be changed soon. |

| Pretty ironic since Zaha Hadid is responsible for the development of Elefteria Square in Lefkosia... I wonder if she did the graphic design for these pictures, or whether they had a Turkish or Turkish Cypriot designer involved in them who thought they could sneak the flag in. I couldn't find the hi-res image, and you'd need an electron microscope to see it on the standard size pic. |

from the cyprus weekly article
Quote: Hadid spokesman Roger Howie said the appearance of the flag in the graphic down to an Italy-based company that handles all of Hadid’s graphics and animation work.
“It appears to be a random flag selection from our graphics company,” Howie told The Cyprus Weekly.

It's a link at the bottom of the page to a zip file containing a hi res version of the picture and some other pictures (interior) etc. |

It is clear. However, I am not going to dignify the argument by posting it!
I presume the writer worked themselves into a sweat because the flag was between those of two G8 members (Canada and Germany) - if it had been between Paraguay and Tonga nobody would've given two hoots ;)
Honestly! All this reminds me of the people who look for Internet posts which imply "Ireland" = "Republic of Ireland" and respond that, in their world view, "Ireland" = "Northern Ireland" and the Republic of Ireland is, presumably, some unmentionable or unprintable word. (Such people do exist - I got an email from one, and knocked him down pretty smartly in response).

| Come on Alastair, you know how big the whole 'recognition' or 'implied recognition' scenario is in Cyprus. Hence, such a furore would be expected, even if this is just an insignificant graphic design piece (it's not like the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus is likely to be flying over the real 2012 olympic site). I think even if the flag had been between Tonga and Tuvalu this would still be an issue. It's not for us to simply dismiss it, but it is for us to despair that it matters so much in this particular case. |

i think the reaction may have been a little OTT.
Or is there a secret government plot that will have happened in 2012 that we do not know about? |

| Someone obviously made a boob, did an internet search for 'Cyprus flag' and grabbed the first one they saw... forgive them, they're Italians... they were probably trying to do the picture while a Roma game was on... |

| Dont worry guys the Greek Cypriots have lodged complaints with the Olympic Committee, EU UN UK USA Greece China Russia EHCR the flag makers association, Green Peace, RSPCA and anyone else they can think of to have that flag removed, and a hefty law suit against the company that put that flat there....Greek Cypriot mentality for you         |
