Israeli security forces have arrested at least nine people after a scuffle at the Neve Dekalim settlement in Gaza.

Israeli troops entereed Neve Dekalim, the largest in Gaza, earlier today. Protesters had blocked the gates of the settlement yesterday.

Troops sawed through a gate closed by opponents of the withdrawal, enabling moving trucks to enter freely.

However, at least nine people were arrested after scuffles broke out between protesters and security forces.

Both sides could be seen throwing punches other as around 150 youths linked arms across the main road in Neve Dekalim in order to prevent the passage of the removal vans.

Israel has given Gaza's 8,500 settlers until Wednesday to leave or be removed. Shaul Mofaz, the Israeli defence minister, said the operation to remove the settlers would be "carried out in the shortest time possible".

"From today, anyone who interferes with the evacuation will be arrested," Mr Mofaz said, insisting that "calm will be upheld".

Mr Mofaz also said Palestinians will not be allowed to enter Gaza settlements until one month after the Israeli withdrawal.

Well the belief is that Israel is withdrawing from one side and constructing on the other side hence this will summount to nothing.

Well Israel holds a lot of Palestinian land and even though she is evacuating the Gaza strip she is building heavily in other occupied parts of Palestine.

Particularly in the section around East Jerusalem where they are building the wall... Gaza means nothing to Israel, whereas East Jerusalem is regarded as their land by right and by settling tens of thousands of people in that zone, they intend to render it unreturnable.

Most of the settlers are being promised new settlements either in the Negev or between Ashkelon and the border with Gaza, i.e. within Israel's 1967 borders, but I'm sure that most of them will choose to settle on the West Bank... for them it's a mission to settle all the land between the Great Sea - the Mediterranean, and the two rivers of the Tigris and Euphrates. All the land in between is regarded by hardline Orthodox Jews as the land of Greater Israel.
