There was also a story going round that President Bush and Tony Blair prayed together on their first meeting after 11/9. That was explicitly and specifically denied at the time, but I have no doubt (IMO) that both that event and this happened ...

I agree, both of them are known to be deeply religious... Bush more so than Blair.
Bush however, is the far more frightening character of the two... I have no doubt that he sees it as America's god-given mission to spread 'democracy' and civilisation around the world... in that way, he's no different to the British imperialists like Cecil Rhodes who saw it as the 'white man's burden' to bring countries into the empire and undertook his missions with a missionary zeal. Bush is the man who's brought us to the point where there is a clash of civilisations, not because of his attempts to spread 'democracy', but because he frames his discourse on global issues in religious terms.
I once read a book called 'The Handmaid's Tale' by Margaret Atwood, which envisaged life in a monotheocratic Republic of Gilead (a post-apocalyptic USA), taken over by a far-right clique... recommended reading for everyone and I'm sure a panacea for President Bush. |

He is an exemplar of the most serious problem with the US system - that the President is essentially "above the fray" and unchallengeable by fellow politicians; he does not appear in front of the House of Representatives, the Senate or any Congressional committee and, really, is not questioned at all by anyone; there are almost no official press conferences where questions are asked, public meetings are even tamer than here (some of the goings-on on that score in the 2004 Presidential election were incredible) and the US press appears to be losing the backbone it briefly grew after Hurricane Katrina. (It is incredible the amount of reporting, rather than journalism, there is - "President Bush said <blah>" without any real analysis or questioning of <blah>).
It seems more likely that an incompetent could gain power in that system than ours - not that it is perfect!
(Observe the current worries about David Davis - that, as a poor speaker, he would be progressively cut into small pieces by Messrs Blair and/or Brown in Parliament. That sort of issue just doesn't appear on the US radar; the President could literally get away without being able to string two words together).

Sounds surprisingly like the Republic of Cyprus's presidential system... |
