moving to north cyprus

hi, I'm moving to north Cyprus in spring 2007 and will need a car..can anyone tell me the situation in respect of importing my own car or purchase a car when I'm there..? also motorcycle.... Smile

Do you really mean spring 07 and not 06?

I just ask because things have a habbit of changing in North Cyprus re such rules and regulations so I would not 'depend' on any information that is current now if I were planning to move in 07.

To be honest I am not sure of the explict current rules, but my general understanding is that there are very highe import duties on cars into the North both new and second hand and even when brought in as your own sole vehical when you come to reside here. I might be wrong but the waiving of import duty (that you can get for other household goods etc) no longer applies to cars and they are subject to the 'normal' import duties regardless of if you are comming to Cyprus to reside or not. I believe the import duties for cars are in the region of 40-60% on the value of the car as the NC authorites value it - I ahve heard stories that their valuations of seconf hand vechicals can be very high.

All this means that vehiclas brought localy , either new or second hand are also expensive compared to the UK.

I will ask around and see if I can find any more precise and definative information for you. I would just say though you should be wary of such information as a rule - much bad info get's diseminated on expat forums and bulletin boards in my experinence and you should also be aware that any current regulation in the north on such things is liable to swfit change with very little publicity or information.

Again the usual disclaimer - just because this information is on a website somewhere it does not mean it is accurate or current.

Having said that ti does seem to be inline with my personal perception of the current rules.

Hi snobieone and welcome, we are moving to nc around that time, and we have asked our friends who live there about this, I wanted to bring my rav 4 with me, which will only be five years old when we move, and they have told me not to bother, because of the import duty and also it will be too old!!, they have said we would be much better off buying a second hand car there, or crossing the border to south and buying, and re registering in the north. Hope this helps
