I wonder if someone managed to dig up some potentially damaging dirt against the Austrian Chancellor... Laughing

I wouldn't be surprised if it had come to that Wink

Hopefully this will also be looked back upon as a historic day for Cyprus. Perhaps in 50 years we'll look back and say 'That was the day when a solution in Cyprus became inevitable'.

Here's hoping folks.

I think she will respond negatively to the article about not being able to veto cyprus and try to get that removed, if turkey does not do that then she will be hostage to the Greek Cypriot for ever imo.

Is there some connection between Austrian capitualtion and this news story I wonder?

http://news.bbc.co.uk/go/rss/-/1/hi/world/europe/4305682.stm

Quote:
The UN's top war crimes prosecutor says EU hopeful Croatia is now fully co-operating with the tribunal.

The agreement on frame work document and this story above are currently last two news items in my BBC newsfeed for Europe.

As I said in another post a day or so ago Erol, I'd bet my life that Austria got concessions from the EU on restarting talks with Croatia in return for agreement on Turkey.

Yes it is interesting that this story suddenly appeared as soon as Austria agreed to the talks with Turkey should go ahead without its 'special partnership' included.

So that is how the EU operates, if you don't get what you want blackmail them on another issue until they cave in, interesting sort of democrasy.

That is the way the EU has always operated. It is also the way Greece secured Republic of Cyprus entry without any requirment on a settlement - by making it clear that it would simply block every and any planned expansion unless the Republic of Cyprus was allowed entry without a solution.

Business as usual in the EU.

Yes i am aware of that and so cyprus never really got in on its own merits, just its big brother bullied the rest to let her in on the grounds of this would be another form of Enosis.

Amen. Ultimately, Austria knows it will have plenty more chances to extract the fat from its fellow members during the negotiation process and at the end will still have the option of saying 'no'. By which time of course, their buddy Croatia will already be a member.

I am still convinced that Turkey will follow the path but when the time comes not enter the union and form its own alliance or partnership with other countries and this whole process is a means to get the people of Turkey to modernise etc. etc.

dont really know what to make of it.

part of me is pleased and part isnt.

the biggest winners are Europe...........they can hold their heads higher now when dealing with islamic countries...they will also get a cheaper more dynamic workforce (if the turks will want to take jobs in europe in 10 years).

Personally i believe the biggest plus for all europe would be a one government United States of Europe. probably will happen but not in my lifetime.

Wow...I'm kinda shocked that Austria caved. Either they got bitchslapped or as some of you seem to think they dangled the Croatia carrot which some of the breaking news seem to support. Anyone care to expand on some of the immediate benefits that Turkey would enjoy as talks begin? I think a big fat zero. Probable membership in 10-15 years? I agree with brother. When the time comes Turkey will pass unless the EU does some major ass kissing because in 10-15 years Turkey will not need the EU.
