Ok, so ive started to learn turkish, and can count!! woohoo.

anyway, im learning presonal pronouns, and want to check on my pronounciation.

so is the word kötü (bad) pronounced ker-tu

güzel(beautiful) pronounced ger-zul

also, why is güzelim not güzelüm, and kötüyüm not kötüim, is it grammatical rule ... cos it doesnt explain why, or is it due to whole soft vowel/hard vowel thing?

Ok, now i think i understand the hard/soft vowel harmony thing...

hard ones are a,ı,o,u
soft ones are e,i,ö,ü

arabada not arabade, but the problem wıth güzelim still bugs me

In an old company i used to work for a Greek Cypriot collegue and i used to muck around by saying 'esh'ee' which i believe means 'you want it', is that correct and whenever you say it too most Greek Cypriot they think its funny.....why?

LOL! 'Eshi' is Cypriot for 'He/she/it has'. Do you want it (in the Cypriot dialect) is 'eshis ton/tin/to' (depending on the gender of the object).

Leon.

No idea. Maybe how you pronounce it or just the fact that a Turkish-Cypriot is speaking Greek!

Ahhh just realised! You thought that 'eshi' meant 'do you want it', but it means 'he/she/it has'. No wonder they find it funny with such a difference in meaning. So you're handing it to them and then saying 'he/she/it has it' LOL. 'Do you want it' is 'to thelis' (or in the Cypriot dialect it's 'thelis to').

Notes regarding the Turkish characters: I wrote the accents of the words in parentheses because the computer can have problem reading those characters if it is not configured for the Turkish language.

Sounds of the Turkish Characters

c cedilla = ch sound of "church"
c without cedilla = j sound of "john"
s cedilla = sound sh of "cash"
i without dot = there is no simular at the english language, it sounds like a "closed" i
g with tilde = this g is mute and it prolongs the last volgal of the word
o with dieresis = the same sound of o with dieresis in German
u with dieresis = the same sound of u with dieresis in German.
