Hi all,This is a complicated one ,wonder if any one can help.
I am 55 years old, born in cyprus, been in uk for the past 47 years, have not been back to cyprus for the past 28 years,so i went for a 10 day holiday last april, arrived ok,had a wonderfull time, but the relatives told me to go to the authorities to sort my exit visa out because they told me i wont be let out without one, because a cousin of mine visited there and was refused exit and missed his flight (46 years old). So i was taken to the correct authority, the police and the army to sort the paperwork out,and to my amazement was told i have to do 14 days army service and pay 750 sterling, and the same the following year, they have given me 12 months to do this, and was told i would be notified and given the dates to return, I have not heard anything and its middle of february,(they gave me to the end of april 2008),but recently some one told me the rules have been changed,no more army service unless you want to stay longer then 3 months, which i never did anyway.
Any thoughts on this would be appericiated.
Thanks Mem

welcome mem, firstly.

I assume that you are not talking about military service for the Republic of Cyprus so I cannot help you directly. However, the last time that I was in the south, a few years ago, I was not yet 50 years old and so an exit visa had to be obtained as well. As a visitor you can stay for a short period of time without any complications, but in any case you must report to the proper authorities regardless.

...a funny story from over thirty five years ago, I was in Cyprus for more than six months by a day or two, and was very lucky to get out. I was stopped at the gate for the flight and my choice was to join the army or navy so to speak. By some quirck of fate, it came to me to ask to go to the bathroom during my interrogation, and the officer (in the background) who was observing the process allowed me this liberty. As the closest toilet was in the plane, I boarded, and sat down as though nothing had happened. I will always be grateful to that gentleman, I have no doubt he knew what he was doing, and no efforts were made to get me off.

Cheers!

Hello Mem

Welcome to the forum

I didn't escape so luckily. I actually missed my flight and "signed up" at the Asal Sube in Lefkosa, promising to do my service on my return, Since I was living here at the time it was inevitable.

Since the rules seems to change frequently I would ask your relatives to go to the ASAL SUBE in Lefkosa and get the information first hand..

if you are in the Republic of Cyprus fill this form in and you will have no Problems:
If you are in the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus? Well Erolz or the others might help you!
As for me?
Why should we have an army when Turkey and Greece are both in NATO and Cyprus is in the EU?
What a waste of Time and money!
FOR SOME! But not for others i guess! Cheers:

Thanks for that depurple its the turkish side i am asking about, i heard last week that the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus is changing the rules to allow visitors in and out the country again without being made to join the turkish cypriot army, as long as they dont stay longer then 2 weeks, can any one confirm this at all.
When i visited last year first time in 28 years they gave me a year to do the army thing, and said they will notify me when i should return and do my bit, close date is 1 may 2008 they left it a bit late i think,or they think people have got nothing to do other then wait to be called up.
Thanks mem.

mem AS soon as all these losers in Turkey, Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus, Republic of Cyprus and Greece wake up WE will not need this military bullshit because ONE DAY Cyprus will be part of NATO and Turkey part of the EU and we can spend more time chatting up women than getting some 4 foot tall wanker with 2 stripes making us march around in 40C singing the nations anthem!
cheers!
PS Then most of theses 4 Foot Generals will have to get a REAL JOB!
OH What a shame! It makes your heart bleed doesn't it!

Hi, as the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus/army had given me till 1.5.2008,to do my army service, and i still have not heard anything, i will be coming back for 10 days in april, hopefully i wont have any trouble or hassle from them.
I am 55 years old, falling apart at all my joints just cannot make out what the heck they want from people who just want to come over there and spend some money. ( the main problem is that the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus is only recognised by turkey, so they are restricting tourisim even further then it is sometimes i wonder if they got any brains at all ( the people who make these rules),they want 1500 streling from me, but if they didnt pester people like me and let us come and go freely we would be spending thousands of pounds sterling there, also bringing other friends there, when i say freely i mean a couple of weeks a year i have no intentions of staying there any longer.
anyway we will see what happens when i visit.
I wish some one with brains in government would read this, and see what they have to say about it.
Thanks Mem.

i am sorry for you, at 56 and expected to do military service. my only suggestion is a doctor's evaluation that you can bring with you. and there must be somewhere where these 'rules' are written down for you to read them yourself. if you must go bck to Cyprus, bring a lot of money. money seems to be a silution for anything nowaday.

please keep in touch, and good luck.

maybe leave within the week for Cyprus and depart the last day of June...

Hi Mem,

welcome to the forum.

The current rules are that you must get your 'asal sube cikis izni' and when there you will be offered to options

1 allowed 2 months a year in cyprus but after 49 when you enter the country you will be required to do your millitary service wether paid or not.

2 allowed 3 months and no call to do millitary service unless permenently residing in Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus and this lasts for the rest of your life.

the rules do change frequently but the above two seem quite consistant and i personally chose the second option.

Any further questions do ask or i can give you the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus consulate telephone number in the UK for you to have a chat with them.

Thanks for that brother, i just arrived back home from visiting the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus Consulate in bedford square london.
I got the same answers as you said, see below.

1, 3 months army service and no money to pay.

2, 15 days army service and £750 for the privilage, the same again the
following year,15 days and 750.

3, £3000 and no army service, it seems this is what they really want,

Well i had to take the third option, hope thy choke on it , i would rather have given it to a charity.

so i am off to london next week to find a turkish bank to pay it in.

Never mind mem, at least it has freed you up to go and come as you please, going back some years ago when i was younger i went and spent a few years in the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus and left to go uni in UK and they put me as officially AWOL and i couldn't go home for nearly 7 years until they gave me amnesty so that i wouldn't end up in millitary court lol
