Cyprus will mark 2008 as the European Year of Intercultural Dialogue with various events and has appointed Cypriot tennis champion Marcos Baghdatis as its Ambassador for the year.
The Cyprus Ministry of Education and Culture, as the national coordinating body for the European Year of Intercultural Dialogue 2008, has submitted to the European Commission its strategic action plan and, in cooperation with the European Institute of Cyprus, its final proposal to co-fund this EU plan, a proposal which has already been approved by the EU.
Speaking during a press conference on the occasion of the 2008 European Year of Intercultural Dialogue, Minister of Education and Culture Akis Cleanthous said Cyprus tennis champion Marcos Baghdatis has been appointed as Ambassador of this Year for Cyprus, as a person who embodies multiculturalism without forgetting his roots, his country and his traditions.

DP says:
I totally agree with the Republic of Cyprus: I have said this many times:
ANYONE who raises the Cyprus problem is working for the Cypriot government! I do this myself all the time in what ever country I am visiting and with every person I have every met and will continue until I can go back to my ancestral land in Lapithos! Is this a crime? To want to go back to your ancestral land? It is for some who stole it!
Now the Republic of Cyprus have acknowledged Baghdatis for this stance!
I know the Turks don't like anyone mentioning the Invasion or the occupation of Cyprus and it is brought up everyday ALL around the world BUT it will not be swept under the carpet as easily as other Turkish conquests! AND the EU will NOT be FOOLED by Turkeys arrogance!
cheers!
Congratulations to Baghdatis and keep up the good work! |

I am frankly stunned, shocked and taken aback by the Greek and Greek Cypriot communities response to Tennis player Marcos Baghdatis exposure as an enthusiastic and participating MEMBER of a neo-nazi, Chrysi Avyi ( Golden Dawn ) linked hooligans club, The HFC or Hellas Fan Club
It is well known and well documented in the mainstream Australian media that the HFC is an unruly gang of racist, far-right THUGS that masquerades itself as a "Hellenic sports supporters club" whilst waving banners that VILIFY The Turkish, Turkish Cypriot, Albanian and Macedonian races and indeed the Muslim religion, whilst chanting provocative racially motivated slogans of pure hatred , slogans that under Australian law "Incite Racial Hatred" and Vilify a number of ethnic groups that these thugs deem "Inferior" to their own "Supreme Race"
HFC ringleader Chris Vlahogiannis is described by upstanding members of the Greek Australian community as a "Serial Pest" and BANNED from attending Greek Australian soccer matches for 10 years by South Melbourne FC president Leo Athanasakis
After Melbourne police were forced to deploy Capsicum Spray ( MACE ) at an Economides match at the 2008 Australian tennis Open to quell unruly HFC hooligans, Mr Leo Athanasakis said the following in a media statement regarding Vlahogiannis' notorious HFC "These guys seem to be the common denominator in all of these incidents. They've got no credibility with anyone, especially the Greek community,"
Since Vlahogiannis has faced possible criminal charges for the incident and been under the media spotlight, Marcos Baghdatis has been seen in Youtube videos of HFC gatherings to be not only a PARTICIPATING HFC MEMBER but also a close personal friend of the HFC ringleaders the hellasfanclub.com web site has gone out of its way to conceal all the incriminating evidence of its neo-Nazi political agenda
Fortunately the web is archived in many many places, here is a link to the CHANTS page that was taken offline in a hurry after the HFC MACE debacle
http://tinyurl.com/2wbpev
http://web.archive.org/web/20070428200343/www.hellasfanclub.com/index.php?pg=chants
The following HFC Chants are undeniably vilification and inflamatory incitements to religious and racial hatred
TOURKI THIMISOU TO 21' POU OLA TA MOUNOPANA PETHENAN ENA ENA
(Right Side) Tourkos Kalos
(Left Side) Mono Nekros

Gia Sena Tragoudoooo
Marco Sagapo Marco Sagapo Marco Sagapooooo
How many decent upstanding Greeks or Greek Cypriots would offer an accurate translation of these chants ?
Let me tell you what shocks me most, instead of CONDEMNING Marcos Baghdatis' utterly inappropriate abuse of his role as an ambassador for Cyprus, an ambassador for tennis and for sports and a role model for aspiring young athletes around the world what do I see Greeks doing ?
Firstly I see them denying the obvious, that he is an active member of a well know Neo-Nazi hooligan crew that uses sporting events as a soapbox for its fascist political agenda
I see people saying "Marcos doesn't mean Turks out of Cyprus he means MAINLAND TURKISH MILITARY PERSONNEL out of Cyprus" like pitiful apologists !
And then to add insult to this grave injury to all decent, educated, sophisticated non-racist Greeks the world over...
Recommending he be some EU funded mascot for peace in Cyprus !!!
Only one word for this
FARCE ! |

One can also assume there is another camp, THE SILENT MAJORITY
It's high time the silent majority of Greeks & Greek Cypriots stood up to these racist bullies that give us all a bad name on the international arena
To quote the British Bard Mr. Billy Brag
"The majority by their silence will PAY for days like these" |

| Thank you for the post dimou. It is so refreshing to see that there are Greeks out there that do not discrace some of the most basic human values. On the contrary, your views are a breath of fresh air. Thank you once again. |

Dimou you have no idea about the guys of the hellas fan club, I know many of them personally and most are just ignorant kids and some are just nice people who go with the flow. I don't like what they do or what they say, actually it is quite embarassing but unfortunately in sports many such groups exist. The fans of APOEL (my football team in Cyprus) are no better neither Croats, Serbs, Turks or Italians in Australia. To change nationalism in sports it requires cultural shift and I believe that shift cannot happened by effectively doing the same thing in return. Attacking, offending, generalising, calling names etc.

Dimou I don't know what your intencives are but stop trying to twist the facts. Did you see the video with the police using the spray, look at it again and tell me whether if they were forced to do so or not. Even the players Gonzalez and Economides critisiced the police. I don't want to defend HFC but I cannot stand bullshit talking. |

Ditto from me. The more Greek Cypriots that stand up & speak out against this racism, the more trust, respect and dignity will develop between us all. Of course, it's a two way street and as I've posted elsewhere, if Turkish Cypriots were chanting similar, it is important we also check such offensive racist behaviour.
At some point, like-minded people and groups in Cyprus should form a common platform against racism. We need to educate people on/off the island what racism is - judging by some of the comments on this Forum, even some of the most educated would struggle in the UK - probably the most advanced country when it comes to checking racism. |

Boys and Girls the FIRST thing I would like to say is that the great thing about Australia is freedom of speech!
That is more than I can say about the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus and Turkey:
In the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus your lips are Always sealed (Expect for Levant) AND in Turkey there is always a bullet with your name on it:
SECOND
Going back to Baghdatis incident at Hellas:
Did you all know that the leader of the Hellas Fan club has been banned from Hellas for 10 YEARS?
Why?
Because he incited hatred against the Macedonians, The Croatians and others at EVERY Hellas match: A few years ago when Hellas was playing the Cypriot team PANCYPIOS he yelled out to the Cypriots " Look boys I didn't know that donkeys could play football" and then when our player scored the winning goal he yelled out " TURKO SPOROS!"
Mate my cousin Yannos wanted to stick a Coke bottle up his nose! The funny thing is that the person who scored the goal was a Greek and not a Cypriot! When he found out he started yelling " PROTHOTIS-TRAITOR! at him"
So you see Badgdits got sucked in by these clowns, BUT I am sure he will be on his toes next time:
As for the all the chants above I disagree with all of them expect the EXO H TOUPKI APO TH KYPRO!
BUT I would also like to add EXO H ELLINES APO TH KYPRO as well!!!
Why because we are Cypriots! Funny how the Greeks have adopted Baghdatis for his own? Why because the Cypriots where too slow to race down to the Tennis Center to support him and do you know why? They couldn't find any Cypriot flags!
It is like POOR CYPRUS!
There are 1000s of stupid Flags everywhere BUT hardly any TRUE Cypriot flags!
While I am here let me tell you about the Church!
They have Greek Flags on nearly ALL of the Churches in the Republic of Cyprus and as everyone knows that the Cypriots where given Independence from the Church of Greece! Yet they will still put the Greek flag! Amazing GRACE!
cheers
PS Boys I think we are have an identity complex! |

Hi
Check out these latest videos and see if you can honestly still say that Marcos was not actually saying "Turks out of Cyprus" but meaning Mainland Turkish Military Personnel out of Cyprus as myriads of Baghdatis apologists hilariously try to assert
Seems Marcos has issues with Former Yugoslav Macedonians too, oh and please be warned, if you don't like phrases like "Turks you will die on Greek soil !" or "The only good Turk is a DEAD Turk" you better not watch the most high profile and enthusiastic member of the PROUDLY Neo-Nazi Hellas Fan Club in action
http://uk.youtube.com/watch?v=1xCjfJttydg
http://uk.youtube.com/watch?v=DQKw7-ya1e8
Questions for all
Is this the kind of role-model you want your kids to aspire to be like ?
Is Marcos a suitable ambassador for his sport & for sports in general ?
Is Marcos a suitable ambassador for Greeks ? Cyprus ? Cypriots ? |

Thank you for posting the above two “youtube” video links! Thank you for 2 reasons!
The first reason being that by the fact you have gone miles to prepare a fake video clip (second link,) you have on the one hand proved your bad intentions and how sickly and pervasively you hate and wish to defame the person against which you direct your posts, and on the other hand, you have proved how difficult it is to find real material to prove Bagdhatis racist alliances, therefore one needs to manufacture them!
The second reason I would like to thank you, is for the first clip you have linked us to, which in reality proves exactly the opposite of what you wish to prove, i.e. that Bagdhatis is an extremist or a nationalist! When it comes to them shouting the slogan “ellas kypros enosis,” at the very end of the clip (2.02-2.05 minutes,) one can clearly observe that not only Bagdhatis avoids shouting together with the rest, but by the grim on his face and the fact that he touches his face /beard in such an uneasy and fretful manner, indicate his profound disapproval to this slogan!
Now, I would like to live you to the judgment of those fools in this and other forums that took you seriously and rushed to congratulate you for your very "thoughtful" posts! |

Fake ? read the description, it clearly says it is an ANIMATION of the most famous active Hellas Fan Club MEMBER ( Marcos Baghdatis ) singing along to the PROUDLY RACIST Chants that were published in REAL-audio and lyrics form on the Hellas Fan Club website
Point 2, you seem to think that this conspiracy theory "FAKE" is my craftsmanship ? is that a direct accusation ? if so let's hear the full extent of your accusations in OVERT language please
Now, please stop trying to be some pitiful apologist by defending the indefensible and look long and hard at the established FACTS
FACT 1, Marcos Baghdatis is an ACTIVE and ENTHUSIASTIC MEMBER of the Hellas fan club, a group condemned even by proudly Greek Australian Soccer club owners as a band of Far right, Neo-Nazi extremist thugs, hell bent on inciting racial violence and inflaming ethnic tensions at sporting events
FACT 2, The chants in the animated clip are published by the HFC on their website as "The Club Chants" for all members of the club to learn and sing along to, see proof in this archive of www.hellasfanclub.com
http://web.archive.org/web/20070428200343/www.hellasfanclub.com/index.php?pg=chants
Marcos is an active member of the club who chants those vilifying mantras
FACT 3, Many cameras and mobile phones were present at the 2007 Baghdatis barbecue where the controversial footage of Marcos chanting these RACIST SLOGANS was captured for posterity, Marcos has been captured on many seperate video recording devices singing a lot worse than just the inflamatory "Turks out of Cyprus" and "You will never be Greeks Skopianoi" seen in the very brief clip you are privy to ( If that isn't BAD ENOUGH !)
It has been promised that clips of Marcos singing "The only good Turk is a dead one" and "Turks you will die on Greek soil" exist in the hands of many people and will no doubt surface as this despicable controversy worsens and media owners offer incentives to those who posses them
Now, please stop trying to defend an openly racist "ambassador" for Greeks, Cyprus & Tennis, it only makes YOU look just as bad
Oh and to remid you the actual questions I begged still remain unanswered.....
Is this the kind of role-model you want your kids to aspire to be like ?

Sir
I have not "Twisted any facts" as you assert, I am quite insulted by that slur, the incident in question is viewable from a multitude of angles on hundreds of TV and personal video clips
Here are the facts again
FACT The HFC is a KNOWN fascist Neo-Nazi Hoooligans club with proud links to parties like Golden Dawn
FACT The HFC are KNOWN and proven beyond all doubt to chant criminally racist slogans at sporting events across Australia and wave banners with provocative slogans like "Constantinople is GREEK" Asia Minor = GREEK" "Cyprus is ONLY Greek" "Tourkos Kalos Mono Necros" splashed across them
FACT The proud Greek Australian President of South Melbourne Hellas FC has condemned these HOOLIGANS, banned them for 10 years from soccer matches and told police and press that they "always seem to be the common denominator in all the ethnic violence"
FACT The Victoria police service KNOW these hooligans from not just the Tennis and soccer but all the other sporting events they infest with their racist vitriol and inter-ethnic provocation, the HFC are closely watched due to their track record of hooligaism and racism at sporting events
FACT Melbourne police asked HFC ringleader Chris Vlahogiannis to keep his "soccer" chanting down at a tennis match, the drunken hool told them to F*ck off ! they tried to pull him from the crowd and were abused, surrounded and pushed away by his fellow HFC hools, Police returned with back-up and were met with an angry mob Jeering, spitting, jostling, throwing bottles and punching at them, Mace was deployed by 2 of the 5 officers facing 40-50 angry yobs & 3 HFC hooligans were arrested |
